Can someone please help me find benchmarks for these two? I remember there was this site where you could choose video cards from two comprehensive lists and the benchmarks would be shown side by side. Anyone know?

A friend of mine told me that it was a waste of money getting the GTX as down here (New zealand) the GT is around $600 and the GTX is about $1000. He told me that the GTX only showed a 3% lead over the GT. Any truth in this?

Much truth. The GT absolutely murders the GTX in Performance by dollar. If you want benchmarks use Google. Tomshardware has the tool you refer to, but sometimes it feels like the results are off.

Also, Is there much difference in the same gpu from different companies? I hope I phrased that right..

like if you have an 8800gt 512mb from Gigabyte and one from Asus, Is there any difference? I've been asking so many questions because I plan to buy one, and want to know if I need to take that into consideration?

The GPU itself is little changed; you can expect two unoverclocked cards from different manufactures to perform similarly. Though often these manufactures OC a card, which would benefit that particular card with the offset obviously being a higher pricetag. Conversely, different manufactures will certainly use different quality components, which can affect life-expectancy and overclocking potential, however this shouldn't brooded over unless dealing with an unknown or unreliable brand.
 
I've been buying Asus components so far, whats your opinion on them in terms of quality and reliability?
 
Asus make great products. I've never used one of their video cards, but I'm sure their quality reputation extends to these as well. EVGA is arguably the best, though not because they make a superior product. You may have heard of the "step-up" program which enables one to buy a card from them, and withing 90 days of purchase trade it in for full credit towards another card. Manufacture specific deals like these, and of course customer service, are considerations when choosing which brand to go with.
 
If you are really looking for performance for your money, go with the GT. Get a super superclocked one and it will be almost exactly the same as a GTX. If you can also afford a sound card you should get one to add FPS if that's also what you are looking for.
 
The 8800GT is not as fast as 8800GTX but its not that far behind. The 8800GT's price is the main selling point, its so much cheaper for so much performance.
