can i plug 8gb of memory into my motherboard if it says it only supports 4? kind of a dumb question but isnt the limit for 32-bit 4gb? and then whats the limit for 64-bit?
can anyone explain 64-bit limits and 32-bit limits? and why the motherboard might limit memory size?

well its safe to say that there HAS to be a limit at some point because infinity cannot be applied to computer components....Now im only assuming

If your MB says the Max supported is 4gb then that is all, no matter what OS you have.

First off, I would never expect that question from somebody with over a 1,000 posts.

Please refrain from personally attacking someone on this website for asking a question, regardless of their post count. I am a Moderator and am approaching 1,000 posts, yet I would have questions on cooling (know nothing) and some other subjects. Post counts are reflective of an invidual's participation and helpfulness, not necessarily their level of all computer knowledge.

thanks dciscouts
thats like saying just because i mastered in biology im supposed to know everything about chemistry (hypothetically).
computer memory is not something i specialize in, personally i prefer video cards and processors.
also, i wasn't asking if that was the limit, i was asking why it was the limit.
the thing is i heard 64-bit expanded the memory limit per processor.. and if a motherboard supports one processor, then it would be safe to say that it supports only 4gb of memory assuming you're using 32-bit applications.
thats why i asked... does the memory limit actually expand with 64-bit or does the motherboard put a limit on that as well?
also, i probably know more about computer hardware than you do, and you're 37... im 17 :P

Fade I am sure I forgot more than you even know, Now here you go mouthing off, as I said the 1000 post must have been padded post's,lol.

I answered your question once, and beings you know more about hardware than me you figure it out.

Ladies, calm down :P

Fade, the motherboard has alimit to the RAM capacity aswell as the OS. Windows x64 has a limit of 128GB of ram and can support up to 1TB of virtual RAM. However, most skt 939 boards have a limit of 4 Ram dimms with a capacity of 1GB, possibly 2GB in each dimm. However, with opteron boards, especially the ones with a capability of 4 dual core processors, have 4 dimms for each cpu socket, and each dimm iirc, can take up to 4GB

Very well said elmarco.

Heres a sum-up, 64-Bit CPU's allow more phyical memory, but the motherboard only supports so much. Most s.939 boards support 4GB, most s.754 boards only support 2gb, however they have some boards that support 8GB.

lol dude... overclock your 3800+ as much as i did then get back to me.

thanks for the response omega.
i guess what i meant to get at was: why can't i just plug four 2gb sticks into my dimm sockets? what about the motherboard actually limits the amount?

i have seen some board that support 8GB... so you would have 4 2gb sticks... what is the best 2gb stick tho??? is 8gb DDR233 (no dual channel) better than 4gb DDR550 to sets of dual-channel sticks????

The 2GB sticks are several hundred dollars, and they arent that great performance wise. There meant more for servers.
