The only thing that might utilize that much RAM would probably be major video editing, and even then it would be icing on the cake, there's only so much a normal PC can do.

a lot would be like 3 or 5. if it was more on the video card, and you still wanted to use a nice card, wouldn't you have to link video cards in order to support all of the monitors?

You'd get a hub or something. That would do that.

Or...SLI...but you'd need like...2 vga or dvi ports on each card...I think...

a friend of mine back in high school's dad did professional video editing, and had a multi-mainboard computer with 16 gigs of ram, and this was back in 1998 or 1999, when it was unusual to have 512.

Multi-track video editing/compiling requires the entire clip to be held in memory for the fastest rendering, even today that's the only reason i could think for having that much memory.

If the memory is there your computer will find a way to use it. I usually have about 800-1200mb available, even though my system ran fine before I added 2 more Gb

Desktops today can't use more than 4GB (sometimes 3GB), so 8GB wouldn't even make sense. And I don't think you can get regular desktop DIMMs that come in that density.

That's crossfire, chief

it works differently than SLI

SLi is completely internal, where crossfire uses a dvi loopback cable as well as internal bridging, which allows you to use an output on both cards
