9 Series Dissapointment

Is nVidia's 9 Series a dissopointment...

Just for reference to everyone thinking the 9800GTX is worse than an 8800GTS 512MB, here is both cards at stock:


edit: Also, the 9800GTX isn't the 9800 series flagship card, the GX2 is. Now I also wouldn't call them GeForce 9s but I guess NVidia would rather call it a new generation than a refresh like the 7950s (or 8850 in this case) and what-not before that.

From this... you can see the 9 series is just a little better! But for the price... it is to high for the 9 series

Which is the problem. They aren't even new cards, it just a renaming. It's very bad practice, and Nvidia knows it. They aren't even worthy of being compared to the 7900gt/7950gt duo, The latter at least was noticeably superior.
 
Crome, Well Yeah... The 9800GTX is better when both cards are at stock.

The point I'm making is, they're aren't worth the money, when you can easily buy a cheaper card and OC it to above the GTX.

I'm hoping their new series will be an improvement! At the moment, nVidia just seem to be rolling them off the back of the wagon. :cool:

I agree they aren't worth the price premium but what if we clock them both the same? The OC/Underclock FLOPS rating on the cards is out of whack, resetting both to the out of whack settings (may or may not be reliable):

Well, Erm... Yeah, I know, Uh... LOOK A UNICORN! :P

I knew they were the same card, but I didn't think if they were clocked the same, they'd be EXACTLY same, I thought there'd be maybe a little difference... My bad.

It doesn't make sense does it. It has to be Nvidia trying to make an extra buck off nothing. If it wasn't they'd have kept prices the same or similar.
 
They aren't quite exactly the same if the site screws up the FLOPs calculation consistently. The 9800 appears to have a bit more power at the same speed, the memory rate is the same because they both have the same memory interface width and same RAM speed.

Aye, But only a little more power, Not worth the money and kinda strange for the difference in power consumption.
 
I'm pretty sure the difference is from the higher clocks. gpureview can't recalculate the power consumption when you change the stock clocking on a card. It's only what? ~20W?
 
The both are G92 (a2 stepping). That the site screws up the FLOPS isn't enough reason to say the 9800gtx is slightly better at the same spec IMO. Plus it wouldn't make sense, same chip. (i'm sticking with it :P)

yea thats what i think. Nvidia made a mistake ther, shoulda waited and made the 9 series something every one can say"wow....awesome" not "overclocked 8800's?"
 
im thinking this has something to do with ATI's current situation, and their lack of a good high end market. sure, they have the 3870X2 which is a GREAT card, but its gotten some bad media and plenty of people dont even consider it for their high end builds, even though they should. maybe this is nvidia's way of holding off a little longer until they actually have some tangible improvements over the 8800 series, then they want to blow us out of the water.
 
The 4 series is coming out in a few weeks, so lets see what that has to offer. Supposedly it's suppose to be on par with nVidia's next big card, but will be much cheaper.
