95/98 vs NT based

NT seems to be bogged down with a buch of crap that 98 doesnt have. but 98 is in my expericance not too good at multitasking. what are you oppions from expericane.

While I've had a fantastic experience gaming on my Windows 98se system, I have to admit a fair amount of short-comings. The RAM controller could suck golf balls through a straw; it's horrific. The user-friendlyness leaves a good bit to be desired, but I've learned a lot about computers just by having to operate my computer, so for me, a plus, for others, a complaint. Multi-tasking...well, let's just say that it's roughly the same situation as with the RAM controller.

Processor utilization, however, I've found to be fairly incredible. I had managed to, on my old P3 450MHz, Savage 4 (AGP 2x), system, run a lot of games I shouldn't have been able to touch (according to the min-sys-req's on the game boxes, and taking into account the quality settings). Included are Empire Earth (medium), Red Faction (medium), Morrowind (low/medium), and Dungeon Siege (god-awful). Most of this I attribute to 98se's more minimalistic approach. It doesn't have a lot of features to make things easy, but it doesn't have a lot of features to bog things down.

Compatibility also tends to be a bit lacking, particularly recently, what with the migration to the NTFS OS'.

Agree completely with that, if you want a nice user friendly interface then go with an NT based system, but if you want a "no frills attatched" OS the stick with 98, it does what it says on the tin kinda thing, it is just an OS that does what it should do, unlike NT systems that have a lot of extra bits attatched to it for basically no reason, just to make it easier.

NT wasn't originally designed for home users, which is why it has more 'crap' than 98. But NT had some good things (I believe NT was the first windows version to use the System Idle process)

it does the exact opposite, it simply shows how much CPU time isn't needed. It issues the HLT (halt state) command so the processor uses less power (and therefore less heat) when it isn't needed

NT based OS's are workhorses.
Sure, W98SE is finer than 95 and ME and more user friendly than a lot of Linuxes.
But I got tired of conflicting software, illegal operations and shutdown issues.

i had a lot of problems with 98 locking up. i havent had those problems with 2k. but the 2k runs more system processes than 98, but i dont see a direct decrease in preformance.
