ati's isn't a 9800, it's a radeon 9800, whereas nvidia's would be geforce 9800. there would be no legal/copyright problem with using a number like that.

You may be right. Still, I don't believe nVidia will release a GeForce 9800. If they do, I'm looking foward to the "What's the difference between teh GeForce 9800 and teh Radeon 9800" threads. :P

Numbers aren't trademarked, which is why Intel switched from a numbered system to names, such as Pentium. Although thats true, if they did call it the 9800 then there may be some of those questions.

Plus the 45nms are going to have numbers like that, only something like the QX9800. Shall we name a few other things the 9800?

Ya eventually. Its not like dual gpu's on one board is anything new.

6600 Dual
and theres even older cards that did that.

And ATI had a very short lived 8000 series (read: one card that I can remember) and they had a 7000 series so I don't understand the issue about ohh 9000 series, big conflict. You can say ohh well...those don't matter because they are sooo old. They weren't any more older than the 9000 series now when the geforce 7000 series was out.

The issue of the 9000's having the same numbers Ive seen worries about here for months and I don't see the big issue. Ya your gonna get members that ask about it... they just don't know. No difference then "uhhh so will this pci-e card work in my pci slot. They da same rite?". They just don't know.
