hello there

well i bought a 9800GX2 off ebay for pritty cheap and im having driver problems with it

the card works fine with windows standard drivers but once i install the newest drivers and reboot i get the xp boot screen then as soon as it goes to desktop i get a messed up screen that you cant make anything out!!

i have tried the newest to the oldest drivers

the oldest drivers i tried last night, same thing xp loading screen then when its about to go to desktop i hear a little click then the screen goes black for about 5 mins then blue screen.

currently running the pc in safe mode with no problems

the gpu has good ventalation, it has 2x120mm high cf fans pushing air all over it from the side pannel and its being powered by a coolermaster 700watt psu with 50amps on single 12volt rail!

anyone got any ideas?

thanx

yeh but what i dont understand is when i installed the oldest drivers i didnt need to reboot the pc and the gpu was functioning properly

wasnt until i rebooted it failed, im a little disapointed as it would have been a good gpu to get me by until i could afford to build my new pc

i cant understand why it can run normal then reboot and it doesnt want to know

im going to have a listen ans see where the click is coming from, im sure its the gpu its self

Have you checked power connections to the GPU? Almost sounds like a memory issue to me, especially with the weird patterns you are describing. If you have a heat gun, you could try reflowing the memory on the card if nothing else works.

i wouldnt have to pull the gpu to bits to do that though would i? just take the shroud off and go over the solder with a heat gun am i correct?

What kind of mobo do you have? Because I also have a 9800 gx2 and when I boot my computer I don't get any video until the desktop loads up, kind of different then your issue but I'm starting to think it's because my board is only crossfire, not SLI. Kind if a PITA. Also my card will idle @80 degrees with the fan on auto, 68 with it set to 90% with the cover off.

Whether your mobo is crossfire or sli means no difference. Those temps are really high. IT sounds to me like your card is overheating. I would take the heatsink off and re-apply the thermal paste.

Yeah I did that, made about a three degree difference. I'll probably get it tested and if it works then sell it for cheap. It be nice to use it as a physx card, but the way my pci slots are setup there so close together that it would heat up my 460 like crazy.
