so like i mentioned earlier about me frying my c drive (the one with XP) here's a pic
underneath

now can i just change the controller ? i mean swap the controller from another sata hard drive ? will it work ?
i really need my stuff back

woah. i will go read the other thread and see what happened, but i mean i guess it may work. some are different but if there is one that is the same it should work

It just burned the board and that little mark on the case right? Unless the heat from the burn damaged the patters switching the board should make it work again.

i just did with the one for my dell, the dell started up but froze at the post screen.
And also the hard drive was making some "ticking noise"...where do i go from here ?
my dell' sata hd is also western digital but strange why it isn't working

ok so what if i do the extreme ? open the hard drive and put the platter in another one ? will that work ?

I'm pretty sure you need a board from the exact same model drive, I haven't done it myself though. I wouldn't take the platters out, thats a sure way to lose everything

i would try this if it is the last option possable, open the case and just see where the clicking came from. Moving it from drive to drive is very hard. The screws are very tight and you have to get them very tight on the other drive so they dont slip. I have opened a drive and blew in it b/c it sounded like it was dieing, put it back together and it still works.

ok so now i have to look for a western digital 80GB sata, hmmm, now will will i get one of those !! :(

Opening up the HD is a very, very bad idea. HDs are vacuum-sealed. A very popular comp show mod was to have windows on your HDs. These worked great for the show, but died a very rapid death because all kinds of dust and microscopic particulates got in, both when you had the drive open and when it was just sitting in the case. Basically--and here's where you should be interested--these drives made a rapid Clickity-Click of Death noise.

These window'd HDs and their untimely demises were why a bunch of people had a total nerd-gasm when the Raptor X hit the market in all its clear-panel glory.

I would try the controller swap if you think you can pull it off. But the moment you get that thing working, you should already have another drive to immediately back up EVERYTHING YOU CARE ABOUT. Do it manually, and do the most important stuff first. You might only have hours. Maybe less. Once that drive starts spinning and Windows loads, get on it, don't take a break, and know beforehand what data you really want, and have the location written down.

With a little luck, you might just pull it off. If you do, go out and buy an external HD, and back up once a week.
