A CPU that goes good with a GTS 250

My overclocked E4600 is dying..and I need a new CPU. I do rather alot of gaming, so the amount of GHz is important. My budget is under 200$, it can be both Duo or Quad core. My socket is a LGA 775. I am NOT planning to overclock, so i'm sticking to stock speeds. Currently, I'm thinking the Q6600, the Q9400, or the C2D E8400. Any suggestions?

I dunno the q6600 is great but I would think you would want a small overclock to compensate for the lower GHZ. I leave mine at 2.5 and it runs great.

If the Q9400 is an option for you, get that over the Q6600. You see, the C2Qs in the Q8xxx and Q9xxx series' have a faster core design than the Q6600 and Q6700. In other words, you get more performance per GHz. Whichever quad you get, though, it'll be faster than your current C2D. It's one of the first ones, so it's rather slow compared to the newer Core 2 processors. The C2D E8400 is nice, too, but kind of a rip-off. In the near future, almost all games will be threaded for four or more cores, so you may as well get a quad for gaming.

I'm going to go with the Q9400, since it's Quad core, annd should be furture proof.
Too bad newegg is out of stock..
That's a never really a good sign, because they often never restock it.... ever. I think they will restock it in this case, though, since they still actually have the price set.

The Q6600 is great yes,But its true performance is only realy shown when you overclock it imo, when i went back to stock last week due to rebuilding my system is was so damn slow...but re-overclocked its a beast.

to the OP,If you can get your hands on a q6600 cheap then id recommend getting that, otherwise get a q9450 or something,Forget the E8400....as good as it is i wouldnt want to go back to dual core ever.

i dont think a cpu dies out. they just stop working. but if you want a new cpu buy a used one and save some money. an e8400 can overclock to about 3.8ghz-4ghz. you can buy them for under $100.00.

E8400s aren't worth it yet. I mean they are still too expensive to buy. If you want to buy a 2cored CPU E8200 can do the job. Quad core? Q9550 for $270 or Q6600

CPU's don't degrade like that, but RAM does. i know because one of my ram sticks that is now in RMA would give up ever now and then, then i had increase voltages and loosen timings just to get stock speeds working.

Then it finally died. no POST with that stick in.
