A CPU that "rhymes" with an 8800?

What CPU matches well with an 8800GTX or 8800GTS? I just want to know how you acquire this information, maybe I'll learn something,.

Is it worth it to get a GTX over a GTS?

Thanks

Do you want a CPU that rhymes with the 8800, or one that works well with it? lol

I'd say any Core 2 Duo/Quad from the E6600 and up will compliment it nicely.

And from the benchmarks i've seen, the GTX doesnt offer too much more performance then the GTS, definitely not worth twice the price.

Yeah mid-range E6600 would be really nice, but if you want to go further you can go with the X6700. You just want to get components that will keep up with the speed of you GPU. Your computer is as strong as your weakest link. And to some extent the Vista rating system help you find your weakest link, and where your bottleneck is.

I am getting ready to part out this PC and build a new PC........I will probably by the 8800GTX (not superclocked:rolleyes: ), I will OC it myself.

What do you guys think? I have a WD SE16 250GB HDD, should I buy another and utilize RAID 0 and create my new PC. I will be installing an E6600 and OC'ing that or I might spring for the X6800. With 2Gb of Corsair XMS2 RAM OC'ed to 1000Mhz. I will need advice soon, I am excited and scared at the same time. I have expensive components and overclocking on them *sigh*, gimme some opinions here, that rig in the sig is not accurate, I change my mind everyday, lol.

Thanks for all the replies

What PC do you have now? And I remember buying my 8800GTS 640MB for $450 when they first came out, I was a little worried about overclocking at first, but I did and im glad I did :)

Right now, I have this stuff, I didn't know much back then, this was my third build

DG965WH board
P4HT 541 3.2Ghz
Kingston 1Gb 800Mhz RAM
WD 250Gb SE16 HDD SATA 2
Lite-On CD Burner
Memorex DVD Burner
Cheap 500W PSU <has lasted me so far
ATI X1300PRO
Apevia X-Pider Full Tower Case (Silver/Black)
19" LCD monitor 8ms 1280x1024 600:1

I gotta get some newer stuff, it's killin' me.

8800GTX is about 35% faster than 8800GTS. I would get 8800GTX if there is 35% price difference or less between GTX and GTS, otherwise get 8800GTS

you should ALWAYS overclock, that's my rule. :)

No. I completely despise that. Overclocking is for people who will do ANYTHING for speed and benchmarking. The hardware discussed on this thread is fairly good. Why would you want to risk a perfectly good E6600 (trust me, i got it to 3.2 fine and I didnt see any PRACTICAL improvement) just to squeeze out a couple of extra performance?

I have a better rule. Overclock if you are familiar with it. Overclock if you have a crap CPU and have nothing to lose. Overclock if you can afford to buy extra cooling. Overclock if you are comfortable.

If you have the SLIGHTEST concern or hesitation whatsoever, dont overclock.

elitehacker, please dont take offense to what I said. Its just that if you encourage newcomers to overclock, it could go wrong, thats all.

Now, start flaming me.

Im not trying to flame you, but I as well as others think that by overclocking, you are getting the most out of your hardware, and you can also save money. Say you buy the E6600, and overclock it to 2.66Ghz, and now you have an E6700 and you just saved yourself $200. Theres nothing wrong IMO about overclocking a bit to get some more performance, and as long as you dont raise the voltage much, it wont sacrifice stability or longevity.

OK lol i understand.

Its just that If by any chance I screw something up Im dead because I dont have any income yet :( Maybe tahts why I am paranoid

Nah no offense taken, its just that overclocking is pretty safe in my opinion. I have heaps of old hardware that I can test and I have tried my hardeast to fry a CPU by just overclocking it. I even took out the CPU heatsink and fan, and it still refused to die, the thermal management of the motherboard kicked in. Even if I ramp up the FSB to the highest possible it just refused to POST and after a few restarts reverts back to the default frequency and it just works again, so I just think that overclock is so easy that any novice can do it. But then I think flashing a graphics card BIOs safe......it IS if you have a pci card. ;) and provided that you know what you are doing.
