A few RAM queries

Hello
I have a Lenovo N200 3000. It came with 1G RAM but unfortunetly this was in thr form of two 512MB RAM's so when I ordered another GIG I had to remove one of them to put it in. So now its still not enough for me (I multi-task and have tons of tabs open) so I think I'll buy 2G of RAM since its not worth paying to buy another 1G when I'll have to remove my other 512MB RAM. My questions are
a) Is this good RAM? http://www.offtek.co.uk/ModelData.p...tm_source=GoogleFeed1&utm_medium=GoogleDF#nav
I have no idea how to check how good the company or the RAM is. It seems quite cheap
b) is there cheaper or better RAM elsewhere?
c) my brother is ordering a laptop, a Dell Inspiron I think. Is this a god laptop? and if he ordered one with 3G Ram could I take 2G of it out and give him my 512MB stick? Or would they be incompatable
4) Is ebay a good option for getting rid of my spare 512MB lenovo RAM? They have been used, would people pay much for them?

thankies muchly :)

I don't know the normal prices for laptop RAM in the UK but that looks to be about on par with what it would cost in the US (~$20).

Without knowing the model of the Inspiron I can't say if the RAM is compatible or not. It probably is (both are should be using DDR2) but I can't say 100% for sure.

£11 is a good deal for that RAM, ($15.72). Since its mixed brands, you can't say if its the best RAM or not, but it will more than suffice for typical use. I would not swap memory out of the Inspiron and I would not sell it on eBay, the most you'll make for a 512MB DDR2 Stick is about £2.99 ~ £5.00. Keep it and if your new RAM ever gets a problem, you can still use your machine till a replacement comes.

There is this here for £9 if you are wanting to save a wee bit of money

I say buy the one in your link though =)

hey, thanks. I wasn't that clear but I was saying how I wasn't sure whether to get 1Gb or 2GB but prolly 2GB since otherwise it would be loads of hassle for just 512MB more, so I wouldn't want the RAM you linked me to. I did a search on that website and it came up with this short list http://www.ebuyer.com/search?q=533mhz+PC2-4200+DDR2+SODIMM&x=0&y=0 but I don't know how to know if they all work with my laptop

Also, I googled the code thingy from the RAM on the first site I linked to 200 Pin 1.8v DDR2 PC2-5300 SoDimm and found http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?imodule=CT25664AC667 and http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-144-CS which are a little over a quid cheaper (so not a big deal) would these results also work with my laptop? and does anybody know of the reliability on any of the sites mentioned on the thread?

help much appreciated :)

Overclockers and Crucial are reliable. Any of the RAM on that ebuyer search should work as well.

although i'm not 100% sure. Is there any way to tell if one RAM is better? Will the diff. be so small it doesn't matter? The first site is a teeny bit more expensive and does say its 'premium' RAM but then i guess it would say that.. Also I know for sure the RAM is made for my laptop.

Also, the latter says it's unbuffered. what does this mean?

I like Bender (who doesn't? :P) and the name has none, just used it from way back when I played MW2.

It means what it says :P
Buffered memory refers to memory featuring a mechanism to redrive signals to and from the module (this means that the memory module can have more modules. This term mostly refers to FPM/EDO memory (i.e., very old). In a modern context buffered and registered memory refer to the same thing.
If you need buffered memory you'll know it because you probably have a server or a serious workstation.
