A good gaming desktop

I want to buy my boyfriend a new desktop computer for Christmas. I would prefer to buy something already built and I know that limits my choices. If you don't think I can get him something decent for my budget please feel free to say so.

My budget is $3000 or less.

He uses his computer for gaming. He's obsessed with gaming in fact!

You're digging yourself a grave here unless you're a gamer yourself (I'm joking)

1) $3,000 is more than enough to buy him an awesome computer
2) I'm looking through the newegg.com website but I can't seem to find a decently priced desktop...

Not sure why it's cheap but that does look like a great PC right there. Could be cheap because maybe it uses some lower-end parts, such as maybe a slow HDD and a lower-end board. If you're willing to spend that much though (yeah it's $1200, kinda cheap for a PC of that spec, but more expensive than most PCs), I'd say go for it, he'll be a very happy guy!

If not, look for something with lesser specs. A PC with something like an i5 3570K, 8GB of 1600MHz RAM and a GTX 660 Ti/670/HD 7850/7870 and a good Z77 board would also make a great system for him.

Its an open box, that means its mostly used few times, but quite good specs.

If you can get the parts and build it by yourself or any local computer guy then you will get good quality, fast, efficient, at a good price, under 1.5k $.
There are experienced members here who can suggest you parts.

I looked it over pretty well and I can only find one issue with it. The motherboard is only a low end one (if I remember Asus naming system right). But as long as you are not trying to do 5GHz+ OC on it then you will have no issue with it.

If he/someone could assemble it, that would really be the best way to go. And it would be like several christmas presents and a fun holiday project that could be done in a couple-3 hrs :D. And you could dazzle him with the knowledge you learned here of the parts :P.

Otherwise someone could spec one from a site that assembles them:mad:.

It says LK? That's the board I use with 3570K overclocked at 4.5Ghz with no issues :S I dunno how it's a "low end". Could you explain?

I could easily do 4.8GHz on a extreme 4. That does not make it not low end.

You have to look at expansion, audio, and most important the power phase design and mosfets to determine what is low end and what is not. The LK is only 4 phase, which is quite low end, right along with the split 4 phase marketed as 8 on the extreme 4.

All of what Wolfe said above makes it low-end as well as the cost. It's pretty much one of the cheapest Z77 boards ASUS makes. That's a good indication that it's not the most premium of boards out there.

(Sorry to interrupt in this thread)

So, performance wise, I'm disadvantaged or is it just less flexibility that's making it a "low-end"? IE) less PCI slots or whatever it is?

You have less expansion options and you cannot overclock as far as you would be able to on a higher-end board because of a different power phase design.

GAH.... why is it so expensive compared to other boards? I chose it over other ones like UD3H or something like that.

So my overclock frequency right now @ 4.5GHZ is not the same as the normal 4.5GHZ i would hit on a premium board?

It is the same 4.5GHz, but you probably can't really go much higher than that with your board.

Why it is expensive is a combination of things. The maker Asus, and probably where you bought it from too. It is this little thing called profit.

The UD3H would have been a better board for stable overclocks. Its power phase design is much superior, but your board will do fine unless you really try to push it hard.
