A hypothetical build

Ive now realised how low prices are and am thinking, i could finally ditch SKT 939 and DDR 400 for this :

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-GL (friend can vouch for this ram - runs at 1066 MHz easy)

And only for £170, using all of the rest of my stuff i already have.

Id over clock the Pentium to around 2.8 - 3.2 GHz until the new 45nm chips are out and cheap :D

Id also sell the old mobo cpu and ram on ebay to get a bit more cash.
Money isnt realy a problem.

Would anyone else do this if they were me?

Or would they just stay put with my machine for a year or two.

Or should i wait for the 45nm's to come out and not think about getting a pentium for now.

Your thoughts?

If you can, wait for the 45nm. Better overclocking due to the cooler temps. It's only a couple more months away. Everything else looks good.

Hmmmmm im trying to convince myself that im not being silly and wasting my money having bought my other components and swapping them out so early.

I wouldn't waste any more money on a new processor unless you need it. As the 45nm come out Q1 of '08, Using that C2D as a carry over would be fine. That P35 does support the 45nm so you're good to go.

I'm doing something similar, but I'm using my old C2D 6300 instead of buying new.:)

Since money isn't an issue, I definitely wouldn't do that.^

The CPU you're looking at is pretty cheap. So if you're in a hurry to start this new build, it wouldn't hurt to buy it.

Are you keepin' the X1950?

well when i say money isnt a problem, i have money, but i dont necessarily want to spend loads of components, i only realy want it to be an upgrade not a new build and id probbs hold onto my 1950, i dont want vista yet, meaning i dont need dx 10 yet

Nothing, except i have to overclock in windows and i think its getting buggy, its also very hot and i just want intel ! I dont realy have any real reason to switch i think,

Wouldn't it be a downgrade going to the e2140?

I think I would just stick with the current stuff until the 45nm's come out. That's my plan also.

QX9650 is out. :D

Might change that to an P31-DS3L or an P35-DS3L

And to an E2180 (Newegg small price diff, but this is from Ebuyer...)
