ok lets start, last week the day after christmas, my computer shut down and started beeping(great presant i know) so any way it wouldnt respond when i tryed recovering it, figuring i got screwd i unpluged it and went to bed, the next day i took it into work and plug it in for the hell of it, and it responded i restored it. thinking i dodged a bullet i brought it home and pluged it in, as soon as i did that the same thing happend, pissed off i unpluged it and forgot about it. the next day i brought it into a computer repair place, the guy wanted 180 dollars to fix it, considering its a 5 year old hp, i would rather buy a new one, i brought it home and this time i responed, it looked like it would be runing fine, untill i opend up a program, its super slow, and verry laggy with everything i have open, before i could have 3 or 4 programs up now im lucky with 1, my son plays a online game on his xbox and asked for help, some one said they had the same problem and it was the mother board, no i have no idea what that. Does that make any sence that it would be the motherboard, if so how much would it cost me to get a new one and would it be worth it or just buy a new computer?

its a widows xp, like i said i dont know much about it, 512 mem. 120gb harddrive, what info do u need i could do my best with telling

If it's 5 years old, then spending money on a new motherboard would be a waste. I would buy a new one. HP usually uses proprietary motherboards, so you would probably end up buying the same system on ebay and scrounging a motherboard from it just to get it to work. That or spend more than it's worth getting one from HP to replace it.

Sounds like to me if the OS has been installed for 5 years you need to do some major, dust clean out, file clean up, virus and spyware scans and defrag. Probably your best bet is clean out the case and hardware of dust and if you still have the OS cd, do a clean install.

I would try to run http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

it will take some time to do, the full scans can take from 30 minutes to 3 hours, and there are 3-4 programs if i remember correctly, but its well worth the time. Also, I would get some canned air, open the case, and go nuts getting the dust out. make sure to hold the can upright the entire time so you aren't spraying the chemical from the can in the computer, just the air.
