my mom is finally getting her own computer and leaving mine's alone :D

this is what she is getting:

Athlon Pro
processor unknown (GHz or MHz)
256mb of ram (don't know if it's SDRAM or DDR)
40GB hard drive
windows 98 (don't know if it's SE or First edition)
anit-virus software

i've talk her into getting a combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW Drive from just a CD-ROM Drive (Thank GOD!!!):D

all she wants to do is play her CDs watch DVD's and surf the web...

but, should she get more?

Depends but my answer is boardering "yes"; my reasoning:
- "Athlon Pro" ....now unless thats the Athlon Pro 64 (which i highly doubt as they would market it)
- Just looking at the 'specs' theres a lot of stuff that either "you dont know" or it just hasnt been specified -- i'd be quite wary as it is

Glad I could be of service..
Oh yeah,
Froogle.. Is an amazing search engine.. Type desktop, and put price range between 300 and 600 and your golden.. :-).. You might even be able to find something better, or cheaper that fits the specs you want.. i just looked quickly and saw a good deal and posted.

here what she got
AMP Athloh XP 1533 MHz 1800+
40GB HD
224 DDR-SRAM
CD-ROM 52X
DVD-ROM/CD-RW Drive
floppy drive
windows 98 se
pc chips motherboard Micro ATX M863G V.15A Socket A SiS741GX + SiS963L AMD K-7
but the micro ATX motherboard is in a ATX mid-tower case

now here the problem the pc keeps on restarting over and over again, but the TECH guy said that it because of the new hardware added IN, and the put the pc on safe mode and then restart it, but it keeps on restarting...

well i would say get more RAM just because burning CD's and watching DVD's on 256mb might be a tad slow. as far as restarting...its probably the PSU. probably a lil 100watter being maxed out or something.

what's PSU?
I have the check to see what power supply watts is in the pc..

power supply unit. you got it right. to check there should be a sticker in the side of the power suppply with output watts or something like that.

oh, "P.ower S.upply U.nit" ok got it.. thanks!

1. Your memory count should be fine (the more the better of course) as most apps dont breach 25% or 80MB of system memory ever

2. As for the restarts, as much as i want to believe its the PSU the system you've defined doesnt use much power (and 100W PSUs arent enough to kickstart AthlonXP systems)... a 200W PSU should be good ... 250W is probably what youve got.... now the voltages along the various rails... that's a different story

i have an AMD system on a 100watt lol. its not an XP though...only 400mhz. i assumed it would be enough. o well.

Yeah the AthlonXP line of chips require about 90W to kickstart the system (i.e., cold cranking amps... ok i gotta stop using car-analogies cuz i dont know jack about them) ... so unless ur running 1 CPU, 1 MOBO, 1 RAM and nothing else you can prolly get away with 100W :P -- if ur lucky :P

trash!!!!!!!!!!

the computer my mom got from dealamerica is a piece of trash, you can't leave it on for a long time because it will keep shutting down when playing a dvd movie.

we have already taking it back twice, my mom will have to get her money back. i think she will go to wal-mart instead!

oh yeah, they told me the power supply is at 450watts, and she'd paid 485.30

that is a bad deal. the psu sounds like a 250w or less. They must of cheated you out of a computer. sorry to here that.
