A Newby Building My First PC -- Suggestions?

Hello everyone! Thanks for your time in looking into this post, as it is my first. I am planning on building a PC in the near future, and since I'm fairly unfamiliar with computer hardware, I would really appreciate you guys' suggestions if anyone has the time!*

I'm wanting to keep it at roughly $1,000 ($1,200 being my "max"), so keeping that in mind, what would you guys recommend? I was thinking of an Intel i7 & GTX 580 for the CPU and GPU, respectively, but I'm not sure if others would be superior for the price point I'm looking for. I've not researched any other components extensively, so help on that would be great as well!

The primary application of this machine will be gaming (Battlefield 3, anyone?), but I would also like to try out some editing software, such as Photoshop, Blender, After-Effects, etc, but at the same time I would like to future-proof it as much as possible. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll try to elaborate more if need be.

Thanks in advance!
Venom

I am making a gaming pc in that price range as well. However, it is AMD, not Intel. Do you need the OS, monitor, keyboard, and mouse, or not?

If you are interested in my AMD build I can post it for you.

Ok I'll post my build, but do you need the operating system (i.e. windows 7), keyboard, mouse, monitor? or do you already have some of these?

Awesome, thanks for your list! I will need to look into mice, keyboards, and monitors, but for the time being I'd just like to figure out which components I need for the PC to run. Thanks again!

Ahh, I see. So the i5 is better than the i7 in most cases(or at least in PhotoShop)? Interesting, thanks for the heads-up!

I have a question about the GPU: Is it better to go with one GPU (like a 580), or would I get more performance if I went with two GPU's that are slightly less capable than a 580?

If you SLI 2xGPU's that are a LITTLE bit slower, you'll be much faster than 1x LITTLE bit better card.
