A quetion about RAM

Hi,

I recently got an upgrade on my RAM, now I have 4 1GB pieces of RAM in my system. The system shows 4GB of RAM is installed, since I'm running a 32 bit version of windows, it only shows as the maximum 3.75GB of virtual memory, of which 2.49GB is available. In the installed physical memory it shows up as 4GB but total physical memory is only 1.75GB, of which only 831MB is available. When I upgraded, I expected it to be more than this, but it seems as though its not utilising the RAM very well at all, is this normal or is there something I can do to utilise more of the RAM?

Do you notice an increase in performance with the addition RAM?

If so, don't worry about how the system is using it, just enjoy it. :D

for me everything is fine in the regard of virtual memory, while the figures of physical memory is a bit confusing , but still it can be answered in this way,
the installed memory as u said is 4gb , and that it shows up as available memory is 831 MB only , i guess there are too much of applications or services are running in background which is using your memory plus if you have a shared memory graphics card it will use some RAM space too, try closing the unwanted applications and services , and un-select the unwanted programs at startup. in addition to that you can check out this site
which helps you accelerating windows by tweaking the virtual memory,
and you can check my blog too, for more virtual memory tips and explanation here

I don't really notice much increased performance. I use Adobe programs like After Effects, and there only offering the same amount of increased memory usage as they used to when I had 2GB, so that not effecting that. I don't know whether the RAM is not compatible for whatever reason with my previous RAM, maybe windows sees it but doesn't use it? I'm not sure, I'm not up on this whole memory malarkey.
Thank you for the response though, I'll check it out.

This sounds stupid, but make sure the RAM is in properly as i have a just over 1GB of ram and i took it out ages just messing about with comp, but the RAM back went into system info and it said i only have 900 odd MB, and the reason was because one half of the ram was in of the other wasn`t in properly lol.Hope that helps.

Because windowxs XP is a 32bit os you cannot utilize all the memory you installed, either upgrade to windows vista/windows 7 64bit or be happy with your current ram limitations.

I think we need an sticky on this topic. A lot of people(including me) have asked about the RAM issue on 32 bit computer. Now and then, a thread is posted about the available and total memory issue.

I don't know if this is correct or not, but I once read that doubling the RAM gives a 20% increase in performance.
