a quick question

hi
just a quick question on the two pre installed fans on the antec 300 case and the Asus P5Q motherboard. i can see where they are supposed to go on the motherboard it is marked cha fan 1 and cha fan 2 and have 3 pins. the fans have a 3 speed switch and what looks like a black four pin connector with 1 black and 1 red cable part of the connector is not in use is this right. hope you can understand this. thanks

I used the same combination case and MB on a computer I built for the Wife's office. Yea the fans only have Molex connectors, no option for connecting to the MB. I used them "as is" and with the fans set on low they were quiet and temps were quite low. You could, however, replace the fans with ones with the three pin MB connector, which is what I'd do if I was going to use the computer for something more demanding than running an office database.

Okay, if the fans do not come with 3 pin connectors then they don't need to be connected. If you wanted to adjust the fan speed without opening up the computer you could buy a couple of molex to 3 pin adapters and hook them up to a drive bay fan speed controller. If you buy one of the larger models that control 4+ fans, they often come with these adapters.

hi
thanks for all the answers, as this is my first build and this is going to sound like a stupid question where exactly do they plug into.

Where exactly do what plug into?

If the fan only has molex connectors, then they should plug directly into your power supply.

If the fan includes a 3-pin motherboard connector, which I'm pretty sure the Tri-Cool does, then you simply plug it into the 3-pin header on the motherboard.

If you are talking about the fan speed controller, the back of the fan controller has several 3-pin ports which can control the speeds of the fans that are attached. For molex fans, you need a molex to 3-pin converter to plug the molex fan into the back of the fan controller.

thanks for your reply, i think the 3 pin connectors on the motherboard are for the optional extra fans you can install, these are the 2 pre-installed fans, looking at the connectors on them it seems like you say they plug into the power supply. thanks once again
