A Sad Day...

Today I got the message I've been expecting for a while, Firefox no longer supports Windows 2000 and is telling me I am vulnerable to attacks so I should upgrade.

NO CHANCE!

But still, it is such a shame that Firefox no longer supports what is in my mind the best OS around.

This follows the Adobe Flash Player upgrade problem in which Win2k users can't update it without an error message.

How much longer does Windows 2000 have before nothing supports it anymore ? Not very long I reckon...

What is the worst that could happen anyway ? Just warning messages, or could Win2k actually become unusable ?

you can force edit some system files to get flash to work. Opera still supports it.

Worse case is that we will be stuck where it is as far as usability when all support stops. I certainly will not upgrade ever on a permanent basis.

I do agree 2000 was the best OS microsoft released. You do have to admit its getting close to 13 years old now.

and it still works. No need to upgrade. It will do what we need (I assume, since he is still using it). You can edit most files to give it the software functionality of XP (flash fix). It will be, for the most part, usable as long as XP is. They more or less are the same system.

(im feeling a STARS moment starting. Im shutting up now)

An OS is only unusable if applications you want to work do not function due to a real limitation, not an artificial one like "Your operating system is too old" - if they want to be put in a good light, they need to explain the technical details and reasons why it costs time/money/other in supporting an older operating system.

I would be concerned about not having updates like security and critical.
Yes, it was good in the day. Time to move on. I know a few that are still
old school. Still like 95 OSR2.
Please...........step it up.

Hell why don't they just continue to update version for Windows 98 second edition which I prefer to 2000.

...(im feeling a STARS moment starting. Im shutting up now)...

LoL you are RIGHT!STARS MOMENT HAS COME AGAIN!!!:D

Yes Windows 2000 and XP have the same kernel only XP has many improvements and enhancements and other good added useful things.

Besides if the NEWEST Firefox version do not work to those who still use Windows 2000 then simply use one previous version and problem solved.
Trust me you do NOT need the newest version as soon as it comes out.I still use Firefox 5 and it works perfectly...

By the way it's nice to know that there still ARE people like wolfeking (and me lol) who do realize that older operating systems like Windows 2000 are good since most of the majority says that only newest is the best.

Cheers!

well, useful or not, Opera still works out of the box with windows 2000. For the most part there are a lot of things that you can either use out of the box, or use a slightly older version on 2000. Older versions will work just the same most of the time. With one exception. I have yet to find a version of iTunes that will recognize my iphone, and thus carry the device driver to charge it. But it is only a matter of time till I find a way to get the windows XP file, or maybe the driver file to work it.

Older OSs are great, mainly because no matter what your issue is, someone has already figured out a way to fix it. And no matter how small your hard drive is, it will fit and have extra space. A 12GB drive will hold it, some musik, and plenty or .doc files.

Because its about making money. A release is one thing like for 10 yrs. A new operating system is different. There are hundreds of people involved in modifing like for security or critical updates. An operating system is maybe 10 yrs. A lot better than a program that does not go on forever. Eventually you have to rebuy the program. Photoshop or what ever. Updates for maybe two years or one year. Not forever.

I will put it like this. If it cost $100, it better last for at least 10 years. 2000, XP, and even vista will all still be great 10 years from release and 10 years from that. If you do not need what the new ones are offering, then why waste your money on it? Just to support the semi monopoly of microsoft to support one of the richest men in the world? I am going to use it for as long as there are workarounds to run it. Ill learn to program so I can make my own drivers if necessary. Really the only reason I use vista/7 is for games.

The backwards compatibility issue is a pain in the ass for every programmer. You can't blame them, there's much work for fixing things that already work . The best example is the god damned internet explorer (i'm a webdesigner). Making a website work in internet explorer is sometimes just as hard as developing it, and the main issue is that, you can't have 2 different things, you must have 1 thing running in every condition, so, most of the time, is not worth it to iinvest so much workhours for just a few users.. .
And how can you love win2k so much ? I don't deny it's reliability but it's very limited..

It does what I ask of it, and does it as well or better than any newer OS. It is all I need, and it is going to be my main OS until, well, until they come up with a hard drive interface that is not IDE compatible.

Only reason i udate often and buy a new system is because i use it for credit cards, buying on line and paying bills. thats it. Im still using XP Pro on 4 computers and works fine. Im not ready to move.

Well, I have plenty of options to use le credit card other than 2000. Mainly linux. But I generally use my M90 under XP to do it. But that don't mean I have a need to upgrade. If I did not spend so much on parts to play games, I would not have vista or 7 even here.

...If you do not need what the new ones are offering, then why waste your money on it? Just to support the semi monopoly of microsoft to support one of the richest men in the world?

My thoughts exactly!Me and you are thinking on the SAME WAY man! :)

Wolfeking is right people. If you are buying new operating systems just because they are "new",but still use the SAME things just like in older operating systems then there is ONE thing I do not understand:

WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD ANYONE BUY AND SPEND MONEY ON SOMETHING THEY DO NOT NEED AT ALL??????????????
INSTEAD TO EITHER SAVE THAT MONEY OR BUY SOMETHING YOU ACTUALLY NEED WITH IT??????????????

Seriously lol...why???...

I have a feeling that only me,wolfeking and maybe few more people on this forum think this way...

It's all about the software efficiency. I'm pretty sure your win2k won't be able to handle DDR3 ram or harness the speed of an good GPU unit. There aren't many things which are harder than building new algorithms with old tools. The thing is, I hate the monopoly thing too, but don't love either the ones that force us to backwards compatibility . Think of it this way. You buy a gasoline car. In 2 years the automobile market switches to biodisel. Everybody owns biodisel runing cars. 99.5% of the cars on the road are biodisel cars. Can you blame the oil companies that they don't build gas stations every 30 miles for the 0.5% ? It's understandable that you don't want to sell your car because it's a perfectly good car, but you can't blame others for not providing you services for it.

My friendly advice is to switch to linux. If everyone would be on linux, the digital world would be a better one.
