This is a story of a scam artist who messed up someone's desktop computer that I know.

A man said he received a phone call where the person offered to fix his Windows registry for free. He allowed this person to make a remote connection into his computer. After looking at his system the scam artist said he found some problems and could fix them for $200.

The man responded you said this was free and he then told him to get out of his computer and he did not pay this thief anything. He then said after this incident the computer began perform very strangely.

He had me come over and look at his system. I saw an error that said paraphrased: Windows Explorer has ceased to function correctly.

I think all of you on these forums know better than to let a stranger that you did not call for help into your system. I told him I would help him get his system back up and running.

Lol This is like somebody calling you who you don't know and says "I will come to your house and fix your plumbing for free". Who would let a guy who they don't know onto their computer? You wouldn't let somebody in your house would you that you don't know? Anyways, are you asking for help? Or just telling a story?

Know of a good website to download free Windows Vista repair files? I want to make a repair disk for the operating system.

I am not going to do anything to the operating system though until i pull all the data off the hard drive.

I am also thinking he likely has malicious software in his system as well.

Truly and honestly, anybody who lets anybody whom they don't know gain remote access of their computer is an idiot.

And is especially an idiot if they pay the $200 or however much money the scammers want.

I could fix that for you easily for free. But first, I will need a remote connection to your PC and any password you might have for this PC.

I would just scan the system for malware first of all in safe mode. And then see if it works correctly.
