A Violent Death for a Power Supply

Anyone ever had this happen before when plugging in a power supply? Situation: Working on a Compaq S4020WM Desktop Computer. Specifications of the Power supply are as follows:

Bestec Model: ATX-250-12Z 250 Watt

The power cord was plugged into my surge protector. I plugged the cord into the power supply and heard a very loud crackling sound. I pulled the cord out and could smell the component was fried.

In my experience this means the power supply unit is done and hazardous. Right now I am grateful that I didn't end up in the current. But I am curious now if the motherboard and or other components were destroyed from what just happened.

Depends if the power supply had any sort of OVP/OCP circuit on it...chances are it didnt being a compaq, especially since they use those cheap Bestec units. Anything directly into the current path could have been damage, the Motherboard, A dedicated GPU, Hard Drives, Optical Drives, etc. The CPU and memory are generally somewhat protected against power supply failures....but i've seen those damaged as well from a power supply failure.

Well the motherboard and all other components look to be working fine. Nothing was destroyed except the power supply. I plugged my OCZ 600 Watt Power Supply into the system and it is running fine. Now I need to find a good quality power supply for a low price to replace the junk one they had in it.

Best I can find is this for $36 with shipping included:

Antec Basiq BP350 350 Watt ATX12V v2.01 Power Supply - $36

Any suggestions on a quality power supply unit that is lower than $36?

Well, not cheaper, but overall you get alot more for your money, the GameXstream is more enthusiast line while the basiq is more basic, so you'll get better effeciency as well:
