a8v deluxe sata only being detected in promise, not via

Hi folks - yet more problems with this A8V Deluxe - I'm only getting the sata drives detected from the bios if I plug them into the promise sata sockets, if I plug them into the via sata sockets I get "Hardware Initiate Failed, Please Check Device !!!
The Bios does not be installed. Press <g> to continue!"

This is with OnChip SATA Boot ROM enabled in the bios (1015).

So - if I install XP with the drives plugged into the Raid (in IDE mode not Raid mode - these are different sized drives) will I be getting slower performance than if they were in the via sockets? More PCI bus drain?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

Hi,

If not plugging them into the Promise area, did you go into the BIOS setup menu and turn off the promise raid feature? Why not Disable that feature and see if that helps, because otherwise it is searching for something that is not there. I think it comes as default Enabled from the manufacturer if I am not mistaken.

Hi - thanks for the reply, but yes tried that already.

OK made some progress - seems that one of the 2 sata drives the Raptor gets picked up fine but not the other - turns out the problem drive is SATA II and the moby isn't compatible. So I heard you could simple set a jumper on the drive (Barracuda ncq 400gb) to half the transfer speed, but tried that and it's still not being picked up :-(

Any other ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ian

Wow this brings back HORRIBLE memories haha! I had the SAME problems as you're having with the same crappy mobo. Here's what I did; First you have to make a RAID disk on a floppy drive (a brand new, never opened floppy mind you) and then install the RAID drivers before going on to Windows. I still have the RAID drivers if you'd like me to send them to you. Word of warning though, you're going to have alot of problems with that mobo before you can set everything up perfectly. In other words don't get frusterated, it WILL work eventually.

P.S.- To save you some time, the on-board Marvell LAN adapter may not work properly either. Forget about updating drivers and what not, just clear the CMOS. Trust me that will save you A TON of money and time in the long run. Hope this helps!

Hi - thanks for the reply, but if I can't get the motherboard bios to see the drive can I expect Windows to be any different? Surely you have to start with the bios - no?

And even if I did get windows to see it, I'd still get the bios error every time I boot....

Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Ian

I never said anything about the bios. The bios doesn't recognize the sata hdd because it doesn't have the raid drivers to install it. Trust me on this one. It took like a month to figure this all out.

Have you gone any further PAST the bios?? If you have, it probably says that it doesn't recognize the hdd and needs you to insert a disk with the drivers on it. That's when you put in the drivers, where it then recognizes the drive finally, and then you need to reboot and install windows.

Tell me if this doesn't work.
