I bought a XP OS CD and installed it in my Desktop computer. I had 30 days to activate it. My question is: what would it happen if I installed it into my Mobile computer? Would it ask me for another activation? Could I activate this by the same way than the other computer?

I suppose I wont be able to do this. But I wonder another case: Imagine I have to format my Desktop computer. If I re-install the XP, will i be able to activate by the same way?

Thanks in advance.

Formatting and re-intalling is a bit of a trick. You won't be able to use the same CD-Key, as it's already been activated and logged. You will have to call Microsoft (hey i spelled it :D) and ask them to give you another activation code, because your harddrive crashed and you had to re-install the OS. I have done this a few times without problem, jsut make sure they understand it's the SAME computer, otherwise they might not let you do it.

I didnt catch what you mean "formatting and re-installing is a bit of a trick"... Im from Spain and my English sometimes fails :P

Anyway, i understand the solution of callin MS.

Thanks for it!!

He means that installing windows xp on a differnent machine can be tricky.

I was able to install windows xp on 2 different machines and activate them both, windows only allows you to activate it so many times within a perioid of time.

Well, I just meant that IF your harddrive fails, and you have to install Windows again, it shouldn't be able to re-activate. Most store bought copies of XP are "one time use" copies, and can only be installed once. Corporate editions can be installed on many computers various amounts of times, but they cost more and probably can't be purchased at the store. Hope that makes sense.

Hmm, i got mine with the family computer from CyberPower Systems, and i was able to activate it about 8 times before it wouldnt let me.

But if you needed to and it wouldnt let you, just call up the number and they'll give you an activation key.

I bet CyberPower uses a corporate edition then, since thy have to pre-load the OS on all their computers. Otherwise I would have no idea, I've always had to call and re-activte with store bought copies.

Use the search engine and you will be able to find everything on this topic.

4W4K3 and geoff5093, you two know the rules...

If you purchase an OS with a single license, you can only install it on a single machine.
