A 1997 computer will have the CD-ROM as a boot option. Having said that he should set the CD-ROM as the first boot device.
It just hasn't got the option to boot a CD or DVD in bios, just floppy and Hard Disk.
The bios just has not got the option for CD booting.
I have had quite a few boards from the 90s that didn't have the option.
Why? None of these are powered by the CMOS battery. As the CMOS battery starts to die things like CD-ROMs, Floppy Drives and finally the hard drive will fail.
Seems more a likely cause than the CMOS battery. That said, if the BIOS has the option to boot from floppy it may not support cdrom.I should ask if you have ever worked on an old Pentium II style motherboard? They used to have dip switches and jumpers back in those days.
