About to buy a new PC. Need help!

Hello everyone.

I've been considering purchasing a new computer that would allow me to fulfill my hobby of gamer better than my current one. Since I've recently received my first pay, I've decided it's time to get a new one and have been looking around for advice.

Thankfully, a relative of mine referred me to 'TigerDirect' and I must admit I've found great priced good quality pieces there. Here's what I've decided to buy.

I'd like to know what you guys think comparing quality/price.

Thanks in advance!

CASE/TOWER:

GRAPHIC CARD (2 choices, advise me on which is better. Notice the extremely cheap price of the first one, however the second one is apparently way more performant and at a great price too):

HARD DRIVE:

EXTRA RAM (I also have 2 choices here, let me know which you think is a better choice):

Very nice price for that barebone!

But anyways, you will need an operating system (may I suggest Windows Vista home premium 64-bit), or if you have the money Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit

and for the ram don't get one stick, get 2x1GB Dual channel kit, its just better,

and DO NOT GET THE 8500GT! Nobody buys it anymore, it sucks. Get the 8800gt, or a ATI Radeon HD 2600xt. Besides that, looks good =]

Thanks for the reply!

I'm more or less illiterate when it comes to hardware though, could you explain to me what you mean by 'get 2x1GB Dual channel kit'? Keep in mind that I think the barebone already comes with some 2GIG DDR2 RAM in it.

And I wasn't really planning on getting the 8500, I'll definitely get the 8800 now, thanks!

well that barebone does not have dual channel memory, its just 1, 2 GB stickof DDR2 667. I guess you could go with the 1 stick of 2gb memory that you already posted. But if you get any other type of memory like DDR2 800, the memory will downgrade itself to DDR2 667

IGNORE THE ORIGNAL ONE I POSTED!!!

OK OK OK!!! I GOT it now!!!!

I just noticed your motherboard only has 2 RAM SLOTS IM SOOOOOOOOO SORRY

YES buy the Crusial Brand Memory, And put both of the ram sticks in the slots and you will be all set. Im sorry im so use to seeing XFX brand mobos have 4 RAM slots

I get it perfectly. :D

But are you sure the current mobo has two 1GIG DDR2 RAM in it, maybe it has one 2GIG DDR2 RAM?

I AM VERY SURE ON THIS ONE FOR SURE!!!

No, im sorry i got confused

the motherboard that you are going to get is only going to have ONE stick of 2GB DDR2 667 memory. YOU will need to buy 1 more stick of 2GB DDR2 667 Memory

Okay. Let me re-capitulate. xD

My motherboard has FOUR slots that fit DDR2 ram in it, but they need to be paired.

[ ][ ] [ ][ ]

Like that.

Now it currently has ONE 2GB DDR2 RAM in it. Like that;

[|][ ] [ ][ ]

----

I can either buy ANOTHER stick of 2GB DDR2 RAM and have it like that:

[|][ ] [|][ ]

-----------

OR I can buy 2 other 1GB RAM in it and have it like that:

[|][ ] [|][|]

And the second alternative will make it more performant/faster because the energy is separated on two sticks instead of being compacted in one. Right?

NOOO ALL WRONG!!! Sorry for sounding mean =P

Ok this is your motherboard, it only has two SLOTS that will fit DDR2 RAM:

[ ][ ]

Once you put the memory in that comes with the comp:

[|][ ]

NOW

After you have bought another stick of RAM and put it in:

[|][|]

Now you have 2 sticks of 2GB each, so now you have 4 GB of RAM YAYYY!!!!

phew, I finnaly made it clear

Alright dude....check this out. That is a good price for the kit. But here is a few recommendations for you.

You could just buy one more stick I guess but this is what "I" would do. That is a " micro atx " motherboard witch means it only has 2 slots for RAM. That board supports DDR2 800 MHz. If you are going to spend money on RAM at least get the right parts. Here is some good stuff for cheap that will perform well in that motherboard.

OCZ Platinum PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 x 1024MB) for $30 after rebate.

Video card - If you are going to spend $130 on a video card...I would go with a little more than the 8800GT. There are some good prices right now on the lower end 9 series. You have an ATX mid tower so this card will fit(at least it should)

EVGA GeForce 9600 GT Video Card for $130 after rebate.
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3897638&CatId=3670

The CPU cooler you chose won't even fit on that motherboard. It is only for AMD Socket AM2/939/754.....you have an Intel LGA 775, You won't even be able to mount it. Here is a good one for a good price

Masscool Socket 775 / Copper Core / CPU Cooling Fan for $25. There is alot better coolers...but with a micro ATX you will have to do some research and see what you have room for and what works best....this is just a low end base model.

You understand that the case does not come with a fan right? It has a 120mm spot but does not include a fan. Since that will be the only fan I would get a heck of a fan to move some major air, at least 80 CFM! You have to get a fan, you will burn everything without one.

Just an Idea...that case looks great for modding:D It's got that entire side of just a metal panel....I would put another 120mm fan that blows inward on the side panel. That will help cooling! Maybe just do the first one and monitor temps....if you are not happy then later you can add more fans.

Ultra Thermo-Control 120mm Case Fan for $25

Simply put, if you have even number of identical-capacity sticks you're able of running the memory in dual-channel which effectively doubles the memory bandwidth = increases performance.

Thank you!!! Really helpful!

One question though, for THIS ram that you advised me: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2882686&CatId=2368

Don't you think this won't work since my mobo already has a stick of RAM in it?

Change of plan lol.

A friend of mine offered to purchase the pieces and build the PC himself. Here's what he dug up for (apparently) good prices.

What do you all think? Good? Bad?

Ya...the build that your friend can do for $1,300 is a great build, go with that. The way you have been talking I thought you were on a lot tighter budget than $1,300! You will be happy with that build.

WAIT tell your friend to buy the combo deal which is a 950W psu (Overkill but seeing as you have an X48 you could upgrade to two hd4870's, in which case you'd need more power unless you wanna stress some stuff out) with the E8400. It ends soon on newegg!

Actually, I am on a tighter budget than $1,300... but HONESTLY, do you think it's a good price for $1,300? I mean, I'm gonna have to squeeze my piggy bank really. :p
