about to order the q9550

thats all personal opinion. my opinion is that there is no better time than right now.. you could have a core 2 duo at 2.4ghz and you'd probably run everything you have just fine. the 9550 overclocks wayyyy past those speeds... so do what you want. nehalem will beat it though. and the next thing after that will beat nehalem.

you'll need ddr3 memory, so if you don't have that already, you'll need to get it. do you have any parts already, or is this new rig not purchased yet?

Personally, I'd wait for Nehalem if you're building from scratch.

If you're planning on reusing your curent DDR2 sticks, then the 9550 is a sold choice.

I have no rig currently and will be building everything from scratch and trying to keep it around 1500???

Well youll have to wait till october for the desktop chips. If you can wait do it. The Q9650 will be cheaper after nahalem you could do a ddrII rig save a lot of money and still be blazing fast. If you plan to keep your rig for 3-4 years then Id say wait it out but if you upgrade your cpu/gpu every 1.5 years like me then just get the older cheaper hardware thats still fast enough for anything you could need. If your a gamer and want it for farcry2 a Q9650/4gigs ram/gtx 280 would have you playing on high(farcry2 dude said it on nvidia interview on site) Its all up to you. Personaly Id wait it out, if you can :)

if you can, hold on until nehalem is released, like uki said, prices will drop even furthur, except ddr2, not sure if that will go up or down, same with ddr3, due to increased demand, it may go up, but it will start dropping just like ddr2

why do you need DDR3?! lol ram at half the mhz of the fsb will not bottleneck, but make sure you run it in dual channel mode :D

ddr2-800 = 1600mhz fsb :P

just get some cheap ddr2-1066 ram.

there is no official release date, i found that it was rumored to be be between september 29 or october 6th or around here, i would say its right around there corner, because there are motherboards, you can check here: http://www.nehalemnews.com/

This is so tempting. It is really such a tough decsion do I gut it out with no computer and wait to have the latest and greatest or do I man up and place my order now. I guess it comes down to pacience and my budget. I already have me antec twelvehunred up in my room and my psu. man does it look good.

i would wait it out, isn't more than a few weeks away anyway, and i would expect the price on the current items to drop

318 for cheapest cpu, i would say about 300 for 6gb's some cheap ddr3 and maybe another 300-400 depending on mobo, the rest would be the same as everything else on a build
