i finished putting my system together and i have a blank screen o nthe monitor

doesnt boot or anything

i turn the power on and you can hear the fans kick on but i get no display on my monitor

heres my config

p4 2.6c 800fsb
p4p800 se motherboard

512mb 3200 memory

80gig 7200 rpm

radeon 9000 128mb

i have a 3.0e in the box still and 2 512mb pny memory at 3200
I havent opened either yet

i dont think i have the speaker hooked up correctly to beep because im using a gateway case from a coons age ago
i have the power on and off switch hooked up correctly

a firend said my processor was dead so i ordered the 3.0e
but have not opened it yet
another suggested the memory was bad

assume im a novice and this is the first computer i put together on my own

cause i am

and i know very little

Have you tried using a different monitor/video card? Or are those the only 2 that you have?

I dont have any other monitors or video cards

heres a little more background

i had an ecs sis648fx board

and one day i got an nvldr error and couldnt boot up
gateway support said it was a hard driver error
ive burned up 3 hard dirves in 2 years so i wasnt surprised they were all under warranty

anyway i figured id go to walmart and buy an 80gig
so i did that and put it in on my ecs board then i reinstalled windows blah blah blah

for some reason i had no sound though

moved my sound card to a different slot
still no sound

tried using hte onboard sound
nothing

so i figured the motherboard is dying
it wasa cheapy to begin with anyway
so i ordered a newone

the p4p800se

i put all my old stuff on the new board and put it in and got me to this point

prior to the nvldr error my sound worked my monitor worked and my video card worked

everythign worked after the new hard drive except sound

after the new motherboard i have nothing
i am on a computer at work so i dont have internet access from home till i get the computer fixed

the NV error is an operating system error and usually requires the OS to be re-installed. As for the sound it might be a mobo problem, I wouldn't be entirely sure on that one though. As for burning up Hard Drives I'm not to sure why you would be going through them. HDD's don't normally just die, they usually need something to kill them (I.E. electrical damage or severely old age.)

they were crappy brand 30gb drives i think

maxtor sound right?

i kept the one they said was junk and i wasn going to use it as a slave to see if i could pull anything off of it

how do you determine whether or not the old MB is bad?

is there a speaker i have to hook up to hear beaps?

has anyone ever gotten an ASUS DOA?

Maxtor generally isn't considered a crappy brand, though I don't buy them anymore after I had one go prematurely.

Personally, no. I've built a few computers on Asus boards and they've been fine.

As far as I know, through switching out component until something works :)

I would definitely try to get a comp speaker. I'm sure they sell them somewhere though I've never needed to buy one since they always come with the case. Is there a way you could try to get your speaker from your gateway case to work? With a working speaker you could at least see if you get a pulse and there are some beep patterns that would tell you if certain things like memory are bad. Otherwise, it sounds like it could be a graphics problem. Have you tried reseating everything?

ok im at home now nad on my old computer
i put everything to gether as it was to see if the processor was actually junk
and its not

i ahve my old main board and processor in and its running fine
I dont think there is a speaker in the gateway case

i need to just order another case

it seems to me i have a DOA motherboard

i have all the parts that i put on the new ASUS on this board and its working well enough for me to post this

im going to take all of it out again and put it back on the other board and see what it does

anyone recommend a good cheap case
i already haev a power supply
i just need the case

anyone have one for sale?

1) With the sound problem u should check all your sound drivers are installed.
2) If theres just a black screen its probably a Graphics card problem.

how can i check to see if my graphics car is compatible with my MB

its an AGP card

im going to order a new case right now

Even if the mobo is an old 3.3V AGP slot the 1.5V card would still work, so there's no question of compatibility. As for the ASUS DOA question I've had 2 ASUS mobo's arrive DOA, sent them back for a new one and never got a reply after 2 weeks. I canceled the RMA and eventually got my money back. Also as for the speaker if you have any old computer speaker you can just hook it into the port, it only works one way so if it doesn't work the first way you plug it in simply flip it. If you are really serious about fixing this problem and possibly others later you might wanna buy a POST card. It's a little diagnostic card that can read the error messages the computer is outputting. I got mine on ebay for about 30$

I called asus and he said its called a no post error

my video card is good and compatible

he told me to plug a set of headphones into the onboard sound card and that would beep for me and tell me the codes

he said take the board out and hooke only the essentials up to it outside of the case while its on cardboard and test it that way

so i plan to do that
tomorrow Am

tonight im going to do as much research as possible on it

im also going to order some new ram and a new case

i currently have 1 stick of generic 3200 512mb
he thinks the ram may be incompatible and that may be causing the problem

what ram should i buy?
i want to go with 2x512mb sticks

and under 130 shipped

newegg has some corsair is that good?

gateway support said it was a hard driver error
Gateway support is stupid. Thats just a reinstall to fix.

maxtor sound right?
Since 1997 there isnt really such a thing as "crappy brand"

1. Did you plug in the ATX12
2. Try resetting the RAM and video :)
