access the HDD without booting

is it possible to access the HDD contents with out booting into the operating system?

ive tried many different things but i cant get it, the problem here is this is a sub-notebook and it doesnt have a floppy drive or cd drive, otherwise i would have just used my DOS disk

1) Attach an external USB floppy or CD and boot from it?
2) Remove the drive and...
a) hook it to another machine
b) put it into an external enclosure and plug it into another machine
