Access to folder is denied, media is write protected

I am using Windows 7 and trying to get some files from a backup of an XP system onto the Windows 7 system. I can look through some of the XP files, but when I try to open up the XP User folder (which is really the only folder I wan't to look at) Windows 7 tells me Access is denied. I open up the folder properties and go to the security tab to try to change the permission/ ownership of the folder/files, but then Windows 7 tells me it can't because the folder is write protected. I right click on the folder and uncheck the Read-only box then click apply. After doing this, I right click the folder again and the Read-only box is check again??? I downloaded Lockhunter but the program tells me nothing is locking the folder. So how do I make this folder so it's not read only? Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, I was logged in as admin though. I still managed to get the files, for some reason I could access the files on my other computer.

Thanks for the reply, I already tried taking ownership manually and it didn't work, I will try this next time I have this problem though.
