Activating Vista?

I bought an Acer Aspire 5050, with which I got Windows Vista. Now I had a really bad Trojan a few months back, so I did a full system restore. When I got it back on I realized that I had none of the prejnstslled products, which was bad as I had bcked up my stuff using NTI BackUp now.. So after contacting acer thy told me I could only buy it. But that's not my probelem, my problem is that the computer seems to have lost the ability to conect to the Internet, so when I try to register my vista it won't work. I wondering what do I need to do? As I really need the work saved and I don't mind buying NTI by I do mind having to rebuy vista which I (regrettably) paid extra for.

You should be able to activate over the phone as long as this is not the OEM version of Vista. If so, you must contact Acer to do this. Normally when the internet activation fails Vista will give you the option to try alternative methods of activation.

Have a look over here for more instructions.

Thankyou for such a quick reply. And yes I got the vista withthe laptop on CD, when I said I paid extra I meant I could of got a just as good laptop with XP for same price. However whenever I click activate by phone it doesn't work as it cannot connect to the modem or phone line. I shall call Acer tommrrow and ask about this. Thankyou for your help.

When you click activate by phone, it should give you a phone number to call and tell your Windows key to.

It shouldn't have a reason to try to connect to the modem for this.

It jus brings up a Internet Explorer window, and tries to connect to some microscot website, but it can't as no internet. This is when I click activate via phone. If I do get this number, as I might see If I can get it online, what do I do? Ring up and ask them to activate it?

Do you know how to check your device drivers? Right click on "Computer" then go to "Properties" and then you should be able to access a list of all the hardware devices on your computer. Check on your network adapters and make sure that none of them have a yellow triangle with a black exclamation point in front of it.

If it does, then you probably don't have the drivers installed for your wireless card on the laptop (or the wired port, if that's how you're trying to connect). Write down what the model name of the network adapter is, and then go and download the drivers from another computer and transfer them and install them on the laptop. Mind you, your problem will more than likely not be solved by purchasing another copy of Vista.

Yeah, whenever you reinstall your OS, you most likely need to reinstall all the
hardware drivers again, or your sound might not work, ethernet might not work, etc.

The OS knows nothing of what kind of pc it's installed on, therefore it can't communicate
with the different peripherals until the drivers tell it how.
