Add A Serial Port To A Sony Vaio??

i need to add a serial port to my Sony Vaio VGN-FS740. i chatted with a Sony Rep online and he told me i would have to get a "port replicator".

is this the only solution? what is a port replicator and do they work?

This should be easier, provided you have USB on your laptop.

the port replicator is a very expensive piece of equipment, im my opinion that was recommended to generate sales. A simple USB to serial coverter should do the job fine.
