Add Letterbox to 4:3 Monitor

Hi, I have a 4:3 monitor (a Sony Plug-and-Play) and an ATI Radeon Graphics Card. I want to letterbox the 4:3 Monitor into a widescreen, with black bars above and below the picture. I do video tutorials where I record my screen and would like to do them in widescreen. Is there a way to do this?

What you could try is choosing a widescreen resolution, if it will let you. Then, it'll look a little funky on your monitor but in theory it will look widescreen when recorded. You might have settings in your monitor but I don't have much experience with 4:3 monitors or know if they could blackbar it.

All you should have to do is set a widescreen resolution. If you have Windows XP, then right-click in a blank space on the desktop, and click properties. Then click on the settings tab. Click on advanced settings. Go to the adapter tab. Click on list all modes. There you should see a scroll menu of all your possible resolutions. Chose a widescreen one, and you should be ready to go. As said before, it may look weird on your monitor, but the recording will look normal.

EDIT: Widescreen resolutions may also not be supported by your video card or monitor. That is a possibility.
