adding 4GB RAM to 2 GB RAM

Hi all,

I am planning to upgrade my computer which has 2GB of RAM to 6GB of RAM by adding a 4GB stick to it. Earlier it had 2gb kingston ddr3 RAM. Is it ok if I add 4gb RAM of another make (transcend) ? right now I am running windows XP and linux mint in dual boot and I will upgrade my windows to windows7

following is my computer spec:
Intel Desktop motherboard DH55TC
Intel core i5 processor
NVIDIA GT9500 graphics card (1gb)

It can be done, but I personally would just grab an 8GB kit and be done. They only run about $40 now, not much at all compared to other parts.

In practice, no. The only thing that will be limiting you is a 32-bit OS (caps you at 4GB total minus the addresses taken up by some devices), but with Linux and Windows 7 this isn't an issues (as long as you get the 64-bit version).

I will go for 8GB single stick. Can you pls suggest which brand is good in RAM?
Corsair, kingston or Transcend? What else should I consider while buying a RAM? I noticed these RAMs have Frequency and Memory standard associated to it.

Yes right,
I did some research and found running in dual channel is beneficial than running with a single RAM, only problem is that is consumes more power but that is not a major concern for me as it is a desktop.
