adding crappy ram to good ram

I am going to buy a new computer soon and I'm putting 1GB mof RAM into it. I was wondering if I could take RAM from a very old computer, and adding it to the RAM just as a little extra boost. I was wondering first if I could combine RAM sticks of diffferent capacity? Also, would there be any negative affects of putting a really low capacity RAM stick and combine it with a bigger capacity? Also, is this reccomended for just a little extra RAM on my computer??
 
It just depends on what your mobo can accept, you might need to look into that. Also, for old RAM there are dif. voltages on some of them so if that happens dont force it in, haha. We did that in a class i'm in as an example and it melted everything, it was pretty sweet. But i'd just advise using the new RAM and not messing with the old stuff. But do what you wish.
 
well, for one thing its got to be the same configuration (my guess is that the "old" ram is sd, and the new ram is going to be ddr). plus, some newer motherboards wont even TAKE certain frequencies, for instance mine only accepts 333mhz or 400mhz, nothing else. if you KNOW that the ram is relatively similar, except for maybe the amount of memory, then it might be ok, but its still not a very good idea.
 
I'd say bad idea, for instance the timings on the old stuff are probably ugly, and the new ram will only run at whatever frequency the old stuff did, not to mention all the possible problems already mentioned
 
If they are BOth DDR, or they are BOTH SD,or BOTH DDR2, it will work, but if one runs at lower frecency then it will slow the other(which it being older or low ompacity doesn't mean that it will)and depening on the max your mobo/cpu can supoprt
