Adding memory to 2 laptops - Questions

Hey everyone,

I'm still fairly new to the forum, so any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

I recently had my hard drive replace on my laptop. Gateway 7320GZ. My mother also has a gateway MX6027.

For starters, I recently upgraded my desktop memory and ran into a problem there of having memory that was incompatible with eachother. So I went and picked up 2 matching sticks and the problem was solved.

Now on my laptop, there is already a 512mb stick that is non-removeable, but when I looked up my laptop it said could add upto 1gb into the empty bay. How do I avoid the same problem I had with my desktop PC?

I ran a scan of my laptop at crucial.com and it showed that my laptop had 32mb+512mb already installed.

I would like to buy 2 x 512 mb sticks. One for my laptop and one for my mothers laptop. Her laptop right now only has 256mb, and even tho she really only uses it for msn and web browsing, its too slow for anything.

I would like to use Tigerdirect.ca since the prices are not so bad compared to Best Buy and Futureshop, and there is one close to my house so I can pick it up myself. Do any of the options on the below link seem to be any better than the rest? I just dont wanna run into compatibility issues like the desktop and have to return back to the store.

The card on top left in the photo is auxilary sound card. The integrated RAM would be under the keyboard behind an aluminum plate.

Click on http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-139.zip to download CPUZ, unzip it into a folder on your desktop for easy access...then run CPUZ(a black IC-chip like icon), wait a little bit it'll bring up a box showing you the CPU info. Look on top of the box for a tab that says memory, 3rd or 4th tab, it'll tell you the manufacturer, model, bandwidth and timings of the RAM in that laptop. Post a screenie of the memory info here.

Um...that would be the wireless networking card...

That is PC2700/DDR333. However, basically any DDR RAM should work(NOT DDR2) PC2700, PC3200, or even slower PC1600 should all work. But of course, you don't want LESS performance ;)

Some manufacturers have lists of tested memory for systems. Maybe you can find something like that on gateway's page. Though any RAM should work, there are some sticks that certain computers just don't like.
 
ya my old desktop PC didnt like KINGSTON RAM, lol but it works great now with 2 x 1gb sticks or CRUCIAL RAM, I just dont wanna run into the same prob with the laptops...........

Crimsonite, I'll do a scan on that other laptop as well with that same program and post that up too
 
My friend got some Kingston RAM(PC133) for her older Dell and it didn't work. But but someone also posted on a review about PNY PC133 RAM, "DOES NOT WORK WITH INSPRION 7000!" Yeah...she's still sitting at 64MB :(
 
Heres a pic of the back of my moms laptop. The stock ram is not integrated, and it'll take 2 x 512mb according to the gateway website. Right now I'd just like to add 1 512mb stick to the exisiting 256mb thats already there, and like I said add another 512mb to mine as well
