hi,
i am getting ready to add some memory and i was just wondering if there is any thing special i need to do? i have bought an exact stick as i already have in there. i have a gateway p3 450 mhz 128 mb.
any help would be greatly appreciated!
thanks

When adding memory you want the closest if not exact memory namely brnad and certainly type. With multiple memory simms in your case the single addition of memory won't be as critical performance where the recommendation on the newer dual channel boards is to have the size and type dimms to see the best overall performance there. If your board takes PC100 then the simm added would also have to PC100. The same applies to PC133.

i did buy the same type as a matter of fact i bought the exact same one i already have in there. do i just stick it in there and go or do i need to do something else?
thanks

Nope, just pop it in there and your good to go. The only thing, you might have to confirm you have more memory. Some computers, mostly older ones, give you errors if your memory size changes. It's usally as simple as going into the BIOS, saving, then leaving.

If you are running 98 or an older operating system the additional memory totalling over 512mb will cause problems there to the limitations seen there. For 98 an edit of the autoexec.bat file is done to add one line in. But it is assumed here that you simple added 128mb to the existing memory to total 256mb.

i have xp and i havent added it yet because i am not sure what i need to do.
will my system automatically recognize it? or do i need to make changes?
thanks

yup , turn off your computer first:P

On some older boards the memory slots weren't one way tabbed with a knotch in the memory itself. I doubt you will run into this here. All memory since those days does have the knotch for a one way fit. When you insert the new memory make sure to press down somewhat on the top of each end evenly to insure the memory is completely down in the slot. With logo screen disabled you can see the total memory installed during the bios post tests.
