Adding my "Old " drive to my new machine

Hi Folks, newbie alert. NOt just a newbie but not a very hardware oriented one at that. Seeking wisdom from hardened veterans like your good selves please.

My old machine went "phut" after a few years. Now...on THAT machine I had the HD from the previous one connected by cable as an external device and it was fine.

So I thought this time I'd be able to do the same. I've just hoicked ( techy word) the drive out but it's nothing much like the previous one...so I've fallen at the first!

The HD is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160 gb one. ANd I was hoping to just shove the same cable into it as I'd done woth the previous ..also a Seagate ( 40gb) and connect it to the USB port on the PC. The connectiosn are totally different though...and I have a sneaky feeling it just can't happen. ANyone? Please??
 
The 40 gb one was no problem...i googled cables and got a good one very cheap that connnected the drive to a USB port. Not sure what IDE means, sorry. Its a model ST340810A, if that helps. It has a multi-pin connection on the end , and beside that pins for a cable that goes to the power. This new one.... phew...not seeing the same type of stuff at all. Is it worth me just waltzing in to PC WOrld or Maplins and saying "help", do you think?
