Adding new hardware? Internet laptop?

Hi Folks!
How is everyone doing today?

Okay, so I got a question for you.
I know there is somebody who knows the answer...

Is there a card that you can get for the laptop that allows you to have internet connection?

Yeah either wireless or wired. Find out what type of card the laptop supports first. There a couple different kinds. I take it this is for an older laptop?

Hi Johnb35,
What'd up G?
How's ya been?:)

Okay, the main question that I'm trying to find out, is not necessarily for a computer that I have, but for whether or not such a thing IS possible; and by the way, it would be for a computer that I will get soon.

What I'm trying to find out is if it is possible for you to get a card that you can put in your laptop that would allow you to have internet connection without a home modem 1' plastic box or hotspot from another modem in a building? The reason that I'm asking is because someone said that it was possible to get one. But I don't know if it is true, what the limitations are, and all that.

I have heard of a software program that allows you to create a hotspot where you are. But this is "software", not hardware. AND I don't know much about it, other than that it exists.

Wolf King,

Those links are only for phones and for phone service.
As far as I know you can't put 3G/4G/LTE cards in a laptop.
I was trying to find a way to do this, as I heard that it was possible.
Maybe the person that said that it was possible to create your own hotspot with a hardware card was wrong!

But as you can see, if it IS possible -- it would be nice, as you'd be able to have internet connection wherever you are or go!!
That's be great!

If you don't know, there is another hardware option, but that entails getting something like an android razor or something to create a hotspot, and then use that "hotspot" for your laptop.

Just for clarification, I was trying to do this for a laptop, specifically with the use of installing hardware to a laptop, such as a card. I thought that the card would be an internal card, but maybe it is an external card instead.

But if its not, guess I'll have to go with the "create a hotspot" software...

As Wolfe said, you'll need a 3G/4G/LTE aircard or wireless hotspot from a cellular provider. They're usually USB these days (they used to be Express Card or PCMCIA), unless you get a hotspot, which is the size of a pack of cards.

I don't know about a card you can insert in your laptop. But you could certainly create a hotspot on most android phones (if you have one) and share the internet connection with your laptop.

If you are lookin at 4G speed for laptop, take a look at freedom pop, its a neat idea, free for 500 megs a month, for price of the card...so may not be for everyone but its quite a cool deal if you are not using alot of data.

Bologna. You were linked a USB 4G LTE card for LAPTOPS and a mobile hotspot that will broadcast to any wifi capable device.
It would be nice if you did a little research before saying we are liers.

In order to turn your laptop into a wifi hotspot, it must already be connected to the internet, it can't somehow magically connect to the internet all by itself. Once it's connected, you can use software such as Connectify to SHARE the connection with other computers via wifi.

One of the ways you could connect your laptop to the internet is via a 3G/4G device from a cellular company.

It is possible to get a card or a USB dongle to enable your laptop to connect to the internet "wherever you are or go" with one caveat, you must be within range of a cellular signal.

Thanx Wolfeking/voyagerfan99,
Guess I was wrong. 4G for a computer? That's definitely news to me. I didn't even think that was possible! Wow -- that's amazing!!
New technology is always coming out. I didn't think that's what it was. My bad.

Wolfeking,
My bad. I should have realized that you were a hardware expert. I was completely wrong. I didn't think to double check it. It just sounded wrong. And I've never heard of that type of device, except for phones. I didn't think that they ALSO made these available for computers!!!

voyagerfan99,
Yea, its too bad they did away with the PCMCIA card option though!!!
[When you only have 1 USB slot, or a limited number, this feature can be real useful]

A pack of cards? Really?
A stand alone device? Must be new!;)

JasonPDK,
Kirk Quote from earlier in thread:

I've seen it done, that's how I know its possible. It was a good idea that I didn't know about.

FuryRosewood,
Well at least I know its possible. But yea, that kind of hurts. Unless you only read books online, that is just about all that you can do.
Oh wait, in order to load a web page, does that count as "downloading Mb" of space?
Because if it does, basically all you can do is "surf" and can't download anything...

strollin,
nice to make your aquaintance:good:

WOW, awesome dude. Nice link! :)
I mean I knew there was software that could do this but I didn't know the name of it.
This'll come in real handy!!

Its good that you mentioned it
it must already be connected to the internet, it can't somehow magically connect to the internet all by itself.
because I didn't know how the software worked exactly, as I have never installed it.
But that's good to know.

you must be within range of a cellular signal.
means that you must be inside of a business building that has a hotspot or in your house with a modem, or within the United States?

If you're near a hotspot, why would you need to share your internet connection since the devices you want to share with could just access the hotspot too?

We are talking about a 3G/4G dongle that would plug into your laptop providing the laptop with an internet connection. The Connectify software would then turn your laptop (with it's built-in wifi) into a wireless router that other devices could connect to in order to share the laptop's connection.

3G/4G cellular internet is not restricted to an office building, your home or the US but it isn't available everywhere. You can check the various cellular carriers websites for their coverage maps to see what areas they cover with their 3G/4G service.

Thanx strollin,

That pretty much answers my question!!

So now I know that it IS possible to get internet connection anywhere.
How to set up the network.
And the name of the software that can turn my laptop into a hotspot!

Much obliged monsieur.

If you want a hotspot, then buy a wireless hotspot from a cell provider (like Wofe linked). If you want internet on just your computer, buy a USB modem from a cell provider (like Wolfe linked).

Thanks wolfeking!:)

Now I know how to create a wireless hotspot.

Now I can set up my computer for an internet anywhere with a USB modem, and the cellular provider to do it!

Thnx voyagerfan99,

No thanks is left unthanked.
