my cpu fan came with thermal paste on it. if i want to get rid of it, and add on my own thermal paste. can i just wipe it off with tissue or somethign and just apply the new one? or do i need special material to wipe off old thermal paste?

Apply some 70% isopropyl alcohol to a paper towel and rub off the thermal paste. Then apply your preferred compound to the CPU.

Scrap it off, and then apply it in the area of the CPU.

Don't do that.

I use coffee filters (wont scratch or leave lint) and isopropyl 91%.

When putting the thermal compound back on, just sue a small thin amount. If you have dual or quad core, then use a thin line across the cores. A single core and you just need a dab in the middle about the size of a uncooked grain of rice.

0.o that's rubbing alcohol right? just making sure lol.

and thx a lot =]

Edit:
Err is there a diff between the 2 given percentages?

I use Q-tips to get all the big stuff off and then use a coffee filter. The Arctic Silver cleaning and purifying liquids are priceless. They are cheap and get everything off. Even when it looks super clean...put a drop or two on the processor and wipe it...the coffee filter is gray.

I use a very small amount of Arctic Silver 5 when I apply it. Just a BB size amount in the middle of the CPU is all you need. The thinner the better. The best way to test it....apply the compound and strap the cooler down. Take it off again and see how it covers the CPU. You'll have to clean it again and re-apply the compound.

I don't know what you think about Lapping, but it is great for at least your cooler. It's very easy and only takes about a half an hour. It dropped my temps by 4-6 degrees C after a good lapping job an my cooler.
