Yup. I would recommend 2x 2GB sticks if you have an 64bit O/S, due to Dual Channel. 3GB is fine, but you would lose dual channel.
 
what is dual channel? is it faster than 3 gs of ram? also i moved my 1 g of ram around but it only seems to work in the 1st slot which questions me if i'm able to have 3 gigs of ram

I don't think he would lose the dual channel if he go with this configuration would he? i.e. 2x1GB and 2x512MB

just make sure that both sticks of 1GB are in the same color slot. (if you put one in yellow the other 1GB stick has to be in yellow slot too). the same with the two sticks of 512MB.

3GB = No dual channel.
