I used to have 2 harddrives, a cd drive and a dvd drive. The secondary hd buggered up so I bought a new one. I've never installed a brand new hd as a slave before and can't get it working. I have a maxtor 80gig as the main drive and the one I am trying to install is a maxtor diamondmax 10 250gig. I took the jumper off as apparantly this is how you set it as slave. I then plugged it in using the cable that was plugged in to the old one but t doesn't show. Do I need to do anything to this new hd to get it to work? I suppose it needs formatting but how do I do this? As I say, I've never installed a brand new one befor and just expected it to show up in "my computer", but it doesn't
Firstly, the CD and DVD Drives are not Hard Drives, they are Optical Drives
Secondly, if you want to format the second drive just set it as master and load windows setup from your windows disk and format from there, make sure you do a long format as the drive is brand new.
To get the drive working i'd imagine that you put the jumper on the slave header, should be labeled on the drive cover somewhere or sometimes on the board in the drive just have a look n then pop the jumper on, or if you wish you could set it to cable select, this will let the mobo choose what drive it is.
Also try swapping the drives around on the cable, see if that works if youcant get it working from what I said above
