Hi guys,
My system is very basic to say the least, it is a acer aspire m1610. I would like to buy an extra hard drive to back my movies/ music up on to, the only problem is i dont know which one i will need???

I would probably get one off ebay, the reason being i only want a cheap one for now (internal or external, it doesnt matter).

Any help/ reccomendations would be really helpfull.

Thanks in advance

I was not around in this forum when the extra hard drive thread was started so I will make some suggestions here. In my opinion there are several methods of backing up your movies and MP3s each with their own advantage and disadvantage, you need to take your choice:

1) Memory Cards: Pros - these are really small little suckers and can often sit on the tip of your finger - Cons: they are often expensive and not real high capacity, I belive the biggest one yet is 16gb;

2) USB drives: Pros - small and easy to cary around - cons - like the memory cards they are not real high capacity and the price per gigabyte is rather expensive.

3) CD/DVDs: Pros - chances are that you have a writter in your laptop already that can handle quite a bit of movies and MP3s - cons - if you have an extensive movie library they can make finding the correct disk somewhat of a challenge; imagine someone with fifty DVDs holding fifty different movies, it becomes a nightmare trying to keep track of what movie is on what disk.

4) Hard Drives: Pros - inexpensive when you consider the cost per gigabyte and quite high capacity and costs are constantly going down; cons - often take quite a while to get those platters moving.

5) Solid State Drives: Pros - fast to access, cons - expensive

How many movies are you talking about? A large number? Over 100, probably the external hard drive is your best bet (I have a pal with this many any he swears that without his hard drive he couldn't find anything). Between 50 and 100, again perhaps the hard drive is a better idea. Between three and fifty - maybe a library of DVDs is the most cost effective way since figuring out which movie is on which disk is not so bad here. Or perhaps one or two favorites - I had a pal that stuck his two favorite movies on a 16gb micro SDHC and brags that this little chip that is smaller than the tip of his finger has his two favorite movies on it.

I have got roughty 100 - 120 movies and about 50 albums.

the reason that i want to be able to expand my hd space is so that my pc will run a bit faster aswell as being able to keep seeding.

I was considering a pc build but for a custom build for my needs (downloading, burning, surfing, that is realy fast at running multiple tasks etc) would be quite expensive

At 120 the number of disks becomes a bit of a problem so the hard drive is much better for this type of situation in my opinion. There are two absic types of external drives:

1) Portable - this type plugs into your PC via a cable that comes with the drive and draws power from the USB; cons -if you have too many USB appliances as I do you can be drawing too much power through the USBs.

2) Desktop - These are drives that sit on the desktop and plug into the PC like the portables, but unlike the portables they have two connections one to the PC and the other to the wall for electricity, cons - there are two connections rather than one.

At this point you will need to make a choice if you want a portable or a desktop drive. The portable ones are great if you will be walking around with your movie/MP3 collection or if you have a blueray player with a USB port on it. A portable drive can be used to download movies from MuVu or Cinema Now or Blockbuster onLinethen plugging the drive to the USB port. Desktops are better if you do not want to move the collection around with you or, if you are like me, you have far too many USB applicances, since it draws the electricity from the wall rather than the USB.

Once you have decided which type of drive you need then a discussion of brands is within reach, in my opinion.
