Hi, I am thinking about changing to ADSl because my cable that I have now is crap. The ISP that I am considering states their downstream speeds of up to 2.5 Mbps. Now my question is that will I be garunteed these speeds or is it just the maximum download speed I could get and the average speed wiil be lower?

By the way the ISP im looking at is telus (live in canada)

Thx.

it really just depends if the ISP is reliable, you get a good connection, etc.. but usually its the max download speed.

You will rarely download at this rate, unless the host your downloading from is using internet 2. But if you really wanna get the max speeds from the central office to your modem/router, it depends on isp, and your phone lines running to your house

also how far you are from the telephone exchange - the further that you are from this then the speed drops the further you get away - this is die to attenuation

Exactly what they said, I have 10mb dsl and I get 8.5mb download speed but it is all the time as it is a dedicated line and you are not sharing like cable, if you have cable and everyone in the neiborhood decides to start downloading movies at the same time your speed will drop unlike dsl.
