Advantages of having multiple Network Cards?

Say I have 2 network cards installed on 1 PC, can I be on 2 different subnets at the same time?

I know this is a stupid question....

At work I have two NIC's on my workstation. One connects to our normal domain that is in the 172.16.x.x network. The other connects to our hosted servers on a totally different subnet, on the 172.17.x.x network.
