Advice about my CPU Temperature

So my computer was shutting itself off while running and I didn't know why so I took it to the IT people at my college and they fired up the bios and they noticed that the CPU was running pretty hot. They figured either the thermal paste of the heatsink was going bad.

I bought a new Heatsink and installed it. My CPU is a 3.06ghz on an ASUS motherboard, socket type 478. Anyway, after installing the paste and the new heatsink, I am looking a the BIOS again and I let the computer level out.

It started at around 40 celcius and has since risen to and balanced out at about 49-52 celcius.

I really dont' know anything about what is appropriate or desirable in terms of CPU temp so does anybody know if I am looking good or bad in this instance?

Have you tried using the program "CoreTemp" to see what your processor temperature is when not in BIOS?

It can be downloaded here:

From what I've read Pentium 4 processors have an ability to slow themselves down when they are getting too hot and thus, in theory they should never be able to burn themselves out.

There ya go:) That CPU will run hot to begin with. I'm uncertain of it's 'red zone' area, but high-40's/low-50's would be normal. If the CPU can handle it, is EIST enabled in BIOS (it will slow down your CPU when it doesn't need to be at full speed)? Also, if your MoBo can handle it, disable SmartFan so your fans are always running at full-speed.

CoreTemp is for 'Core' CPUs (C2D, C2Quad); SpeedFan, PC Wizard, or Everest would be fit for your CPU.

well some paste need some time for it to kick in.

what is your ambient temperature? if you're in the southern hemisphere then it should be normal at this time.

lastly, for added security i'd add more fans (assuming you only have the cpu fan) and use compressed air to clean out the dust.

Well i found out today about my CPU. It was running hot and shutting down all the time. I found out today when i went to put my new fan on that my fan that came with my CPU had the plastic still on it so it was causing it to become hot and shut down.

Just check the ventilation is ok for the fan. I use CoreTemp and it is a core program for monitoring the temp

Anyway thought i'd add that in.
