i just want to know whats a good Free firewall for Windows Vista, as for about a year now i have been using the built in one, but after reading a few negative reviews about it i want to get something better, i know zone alarm is good i use it for my old W2K laptop but i have also read that the version for vista seems to crash the computer a lot, (is this true ?) so please can someone recommend a good firewall please

Thanks

i wouldnt change it if u read negative reviews if u have not had a problem i wouldnt worry ne thing about it.. i still use the windows firewall in xp and vista and have not once had a problem

It's not really about whether you actually experience any problems with it, but if it does the job - if the built-in firewall offers poor protection, of course you need one to do its job. I'd recommend Comodo Firewall Pro, simply because I'm using it myself - it's received mostly excellent reviews and has decent detection rates out-of-box, and it's got more switches and whatnot than a submarine for customizing it. It also comes with a Host Intrusion Prevention System (I think that's what HIPS stood for...) to prevent malicious programs from messing around, and it also has basic malware scanner... for me it works great, but for someone who isn't much into computers or just wants protection without distractions it may not be the right choice... at times, if not configured properly, the popups and stuff get more annoying than Vista UAC! (and all the options, switches and whatnot can get really confusing at times)

If you have a spare PII or PIII computer in the closet download www.smoothwall.org and build a firewall/router.

It's a Linux based firewall distro that supposedly has never been cracked and since it is separate, you won't be adding yet another task for your CPU on your computer.
