I'm new to this forum, actually this is my first post. I am having serious issues with my PC. I'm a graphic designer and I need my tools to work right damnit! I want to reformat my hard drive, because it's got all kinds of terrible crap on it. I don't have a Windows XP disk, and I don't trust a torrent for it. What do I do? How in the hell can I restore my box back to normal... I've got to run Adobe CS2 flawlessly... my computer will handle it just fine, always has. It just needs some maitinence

HELP!

Thanks guys!

If you don't have the Windows XP CD or a restore CD, you cant do a fresh install without buying it again.

However, you can perform registry cleanups, defrag your hard drive, ect, to get your performance back.

For starters, if you haven't already done so, I would scan for both viruses and spyware, using an AV app and ad-aware. I would also run Hijack This and delete things that you know are spyware.

Start > Run > msconfig, and disable the services and startup apps that you know you dont need running.

Use a disk defragmentor, such as the one in Windows, to defrag your drive. Also run disk cleanup first.

Then I would download an app such as Tune-Up Utilities 2006, which can fix your registry.

What type of system do you have? Not all computers come with recovery discs some come with recovery partitions, which is a hidden partition on your HD that stores windows on it.

Or, you could go buy an OEM copy of win xp pro for $150.00 + a qualifying piece of hardware. A 4 dollar system fan qualifies for OEM. So, you can basically go buy a new legal copy for half the price.

I would suggest starting clean, with a clean registry as you want.

What kind of computer do you have?

Did you read anything I posted? I'll say it again, simpler this time.

1. Remove programs from startup via msconfig
2. Delete any files and programs that you dont use, then run disk cleanup
3. Defrag your hard drive
4. Clean up the registry
5. Scan for spyware/viruses
6. Post a Hijack This log

Ok.

Download and install AVG free edition. Open it, and download any available updates. DONT run it.

Next, download and install Lavasoft Ad-aware. Open it, and download any available updates. DONT run it.

Next, download and install Perfectdisk. Open it, and download any available updates. DONT run it.

Next, download and install WINASO Registry Optimizer. DONT run it.

Restart computer.

Unplug your network cables.

Run AVG and Lavasoft. Not at once, and order doesnt matters. Do FULL system scans.

Next, run Registry Optimizer.

Next, go Start > Run. Type msconfig. Go to the far right tab, and unselect everything. Then select those which you know you need everytime you turn the computer on. If you are not sure, UNselect those you know you don't need. Then, restart.

Finally, run Perfectdisk. Go and watch TV for a bit as it works.

You will return to a greatly improved system. There are other anti-virus and anti-adware programs out there, and I would advise scanning your computer with these alternate scanners just to be sure you've got everything.

*cough*Someone needs to sticky a guide to cleaning up a computer*cough*
