Hi, I am considering building a pc, and I have decided to go for PCI-e video card. I am confused about the socket types. I know there are 478 and 755, but what's the difference between them, and which one should I get? I am hoping this PC will be well upgradable in the future, and I heard that 755 is newer, so 755 is better for me? Is G5GD1 a good mobo for it?

I believe you are talking about 775. Go for the 775, if you must get something now. I think I read somewhere that there is a new socket supposed to be coming out soon, Socket T i think it was, but don't take that to the bank.
The 478 is already obselete, and you won't be able to upgrade it much, if at all, in the future.

yea...you're talkin about 775...go for a socket 939 if you want great advantages for upgrading in the future...that is if you can afford going for 939...its your call!!!

I think the Intel 64Bit is skt 775 as well. Skt 939 is AMD only, so count that out if you want to go Intel. And the 939 is going soon too. Being replaced by skt M, at least that's what the new dual core cpu's are going to be. Don't know if they are going to stick with that socket when they go more than 2 cores.

Its 775 :)

The difference is that the 478 is discontinued and supports up to the i875P chipset and DDR400. The 775 platform supports up to i955 and DDR2-800

If you mean ASUS P5GD1, thats a decent board :) I just built an intel box with that board and it's a simple no-frills, straightforward board

Is socket 939 only for AMD's 64bit processors? And what socket does a Intel 64bit processor work on?
Yes S939 is for AMD's K8 lineup. Intel's 64bit processors is supported on Socket775

And the 939 is going soon too. Being replaced by skt M,
Got a year to go on S939 still

at least that's what the new dual core cpu's are going to be.
Um ... I've got a Dualcore K8 box here and its Socket939....

I mean the newer ones, as you said, those a year or so from now. At least that's what I heard the skt M is supposed to be for. Im sure a few of you have noticed, I tend to go from my memory, and my memory is very poor.

Fair enough but a few things:
1. There's always gonna be a new socket ... if we perpetually wait, then we'd be stuck with old hardware forever :)
2. actually i dont notice much (about you or many people -- and you dont want me to notice ;)) ... too many posts to process, too many forums to run :)
3. The original topic is about S775/S478 setups, not AMD boxes and even then, even if the new AMD socket comes out (late 2006) ... not many people will (or rather, can finacially afford to) upgrade right away .. so even then, S939 wont die quite then :)
