Advice on CPU Upgrade

I currently have one of these mother boards with a P4 2.0ghz

GA-8ST667
SiS 645DX chipset

Processor
Socket 478 for Intel® new 0.13 micron-process Pentium ® 4 processor

Chipset
North bridge: SiS645DX Host & Memory & AGP Controller
South bridge: SiS962L MuTIOL® Media I/O

Front Side Bus
533/ 400 MHz FSB

and I am wanting to upgrade the CPU as the PC is going to be a media center. I have done some research but am a little confused. If I am right I can only choose a CPU with is 478 socket (durr) and has a FSB of 533 and a 0.13 size. I think this limits me 2.8ghz although there seems to be mainly 2.4ghz.

Also can I get a CPU with HT?

A little confused :D

Just found this on eBay. Would this fit?

What about one of these??

ok, well all of the ones you listed will fit and work fine. The prescotts run a little hot, and therefore may require a better hsf and cooler. This may mean a little more noise from your media center.

Now you say media center, i hope you're not confusing this with a media server, i'll assume not for now.

By media center you should be running something like microsoft media center, or some other software to the same effect ( i use mce05, very nice, still a bit buggy though)

Either way let get one thing clear it is unlikely you will even need a cpu upgrade. What are you running now? Remeber running a media center and playing media is not cpu intensive stuff. I have a celeron D 320 running mine, and i have no prob running stuff, and it's running passive (meaning no fan).

You might also think about a new mobo as the one you have is a 533/400 and has only support for a 4x video card.
I would suggest going for a 800fsb mobo and an 8X AGP video card. This would necessitate getting a new cpu and video card however the 533fsb cpu will still fit and run ok and your exsisting video card would still run at 4x and upgrading can be done when budget permits.

Cheers for the help. Yes I am running Win MCE2005 although I am planning to run Media Portal over MCE. I think my biggest problem is my old video card so will swap that first. Just thought I would see how much it might cost me to do a cpu upgrade at the same time.

be carefull here, the choice of video card is essential when using mce, as many are not supported

Tell us what you intend to get first.

The fsb think is misleading, read cpu101, and oc101 for an explaintion

Also there is not much difference between 4x and 8x.

And let remember this is a media center. A old machine will have no trouble. Just get a compatible gpu, tuner, and a BIG hdd
