Advice on HDD for new build

I've been out of the country for quite a few years and unable to keep up to date on what's what, as anyone that helped me in the MB forums knows.

Anyways I'm looking at HDD's for my build coming up and I know for sure I want a 10K rpm and I would like to know how significant the difference between the 3.0Gb/s and 6.0Gb/s SATA drives is. Also what is SAS? I'm only into gaming and I don't do anything very intensive or have any particular needs. I hate being this out of touch with these things and I'm the kind of person that likes to have as much info as possible so I can make an informed decision.

The last time I built a computer the choices were very simple. Now as I'm looking at all the components for my build I'm becoming a little overwhelmed lol. It's a shame the SSD are so expensive, I really want to try one out and see if they're really that good.

One last thing, since I haven't been able to keep up on things I really need to know if there is a particular brand or model I should stay away from, I've always been partial to Seagate, wondering if they're still good. Thanks for any input and advice.

10k RPM drives are pointless for 2 reasons:

1. Samsung F4 320GB has comparable performance even though it is 7200RPM, but costs much less

2. For the price of a 10k RPM drive, you are better off with an SSD for your OS and games, and a second, "green" drive for storage and programs that won't benefit much from the increase in speed that an SSD brings.

For SATA 3.0 and 6.0, unless you are using a very fast SSD, no, there is no difference. SATA 6.0 has double the bandwidth of SATA 3.0, but when a hard drive doesn't even get close to 3.0 speeds, it doesn't matter. They use the same interface too, so you can use a SATA 3.0 drive on a SATA 6.0 port and the other way round.

Thanks. The only reason I was opting for a 10k rpm drive is because I had one years ago and when I upgraded from a 7200rpm the difference was night and day. If the Samsung is comparable I'll probably go with that.

It's nice to know that the 3.0 vs 6.0 doesn't make much difference, like I said I'm just one of those people that likes to be as informed as possible. My last build was back in '04 before I joined the Army and I just wasn't able to keep up to date on these things and when I was looking at MB's I noticed the speed differences for the HDD ports and wanted to make sure it wasn't a big deal.

Thanks again.

I'd grab an SSD for O/S and general applications, and a Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB for storage and so on. If you can afford it. SSD's also need the page file to be moved to a different drive to prevent unneccessary wear on the drive.
